View Full Version : Thinking Of Buying A Scooter

I think that it would be a good idea for me.. I literally live right off of my city's main street and everything; school, work, groceries/shopping are all within a 10 mile radius of my house..

Right now I am driving an F-150 pickup and the gas is really starting to kill me.. I've heard that scooters/mopeds can get around 80mpg and are road legal so I ask if anyone here owns or has any experience with them and what do look for and which makes/models are the best..

Much thanks

Thinking Of Buying A Scooter

...And have recently realized I am a faggot.

It had to be said. My actual response is that if it will work for you, go ahead. Nothing wrong with trying to be cost-effective.

Just don't wear running shorts or look at Jeeps while driving it.

Edit: Nah, Taure, he meant

Which is FAAAAAAAAAAABULOUS!

Fair enough heh.. It was to be expected..

My personal suggestion:

I misunderstood the concept.

If you are planning to go and completely replace the car with a scooter, I don't recommend such an extreme downsizing. Now I couldn't get an information for what the fuel consumption was on a Ford F-150, but instead I would recommend downsizing to a smaller car, such as a European one, that has less fuel consumption. Something with a 1.4 L engine would be ideal for low fuel consumption.

If you are planning to merely buy a scooter to use for shorter journeys I would recommend you try public transport, if it is available to you, or walking.

Scooters are meh.

Sorry mate, I have no experience with mopeds or scooters, but I can tell you that every time I see someone on a scooter or moped I laugh on the inside.

If you are doing it every day, then just ride the bus. You can get some sweet deals with a monthly ticket, and you can keep that truck of yours to use for dates. You can't be pickin' up no girls in a moped, brother.

Nigga whaaaat?

I understand the need to save money (F-150?? I sympathize, I truly do), but you can still retain your cool points by getting a used motorcycle. Plus, scooters aren't allowed on some highways (I don't know where you are, or your traffic laws), so you'll benefit from having the extra juice to keep up with highway speeds. Under 40mph, I'd argue that there's little difference between scooter and motorcycle range.

Meh, I can see where you all are coming from.. and no I am not trying to replace my truck I am just looking for something for my shorter trips with the great gas mileage..

Regarding motorcycles and public transportation.. I think a motorcycle is a little more than I want to spend right now.. and I am too much of a racist to ride the bus..

I work at a bowling alley that is situated right next to a KFC so the fried chicken smell sometimes lingers on me.. It may cause some unwanted attention

Replace all the parts on your scooter with motorcycle parts, cover it all with panelling, and paint it FABULOUS colours. Then fuck with people's minds by blowing past them at 140.

WAIT!!!!!....!!!....!!....!

You wouldn't be caught dead riding a bus, but you'd ride a moped?

You have some fucked up guidelines, mate.

EDIT: HBP formally agrees with Tehan.

Motorcycles can be pricey, which is why I suggested a used one. The only thing to watch out for is someone trying to hide internal damage from you. Don't buy from anyone who won't let you test drive, and have a friend who knows bikes (everyone does) check it out as well. Besides, any scooter hitting 80mph is probably in the same price range of a decent 2 yr old bike that can hit 140 -and carry a chick who won't be embarrased to ride with you.

EDIT: Is your truck diesel? If you have the mechanical talent, I'd suggest hopping on the biodiesel bandwagon. I bet you'll be singing a different tune after you can fuel your ride up with used grease from KFC.

I think a motorcycle is a little more than I want to spend right now.I don't know what sort of scooter you're looking at, so I'm not sure exactly how much you're looking to spend, but motorcycles aren't terribly expensive, especially if you're willing to buy used. A new Honda Rebel (cheapest touring bike I know of; 250cc) is about $3750 USD. If you go for a used one, mid 1990s or so, you can probably drop that to about $1400-$1800 and still get the gas mileage and decent reliability. That puts you on a generally better (read cooler) alternative to a scooter at a decent price. Larger bikes [450cc and up], naturally, are a bit more expensive.

A used small motorcycle is pretty comparable to a large motor-scooter, and is infinitely cooler. Choose wisely. And either way, look into Kevlar-lined jeans; apparently asphalt hurts like a motherfucker.

Edit: Justblaise speaks truth.

My girlfriend has scooter that she uses for quick/short trips such as school. First off if your not a girl you'll look like a fag but other than that it works fine for getting to school and to her friends place and considering she uses the thing everyday she only has to fill it up about every week and a half to two weeks. Personally I'd go for the small motorcycle.

Back on topic.

Why don't you get one of these?

You'll Be rolling phat.

(That is the correct terminology right?)

But seriously, a motorcycle is infinitely cooler and more reliable than a scooter with cheap parts from japan or taiwan, etc.

Perhaps I should instead invest in one of Mr. Garrison's Gyro-mobiles.. Not sure what they are called..

But seriously.. I guess driving down the street in a Vesper with groceries in the side car is pretty faggoty..

Yeah, maybe a little. Invest in a motorcycle, if you're not dead set on following the path to another man's ass. Or do what Tehan said; a motorped is pretty lulzy.

If you live so close to everything, why not just use a bike? Cheaper to buy, no petrol costs, and good for you as well.

Ever think about getting a GoPed (http://www.goped.com/Products/) rather than a scooter? The motorized ones are under City/Sport

Having ridden one, I'll tell you that they can go pretty damn fast, don't require much gas and are pretty easy to fix if by chance something goes wrong.

Really cool scooter (http://www.piaggiousa.com/pScooters/MP3.cfm)

It's a little more expensive, but it saves your dignity. And we all know that a man without his dignity (assuming of course that you still have yours - by this point in life many men have lost said dignity to members of the vagina species of simial bipeds [aka women]) is like a dog with three legs - WTF is the point?

Hoping that made sense,

I guess I see how you can compare a four-wheeled mobility chair to a three wheeled motor scooter. [/sarcasm]

I swear to hell, there was a city (I don't remember the name, I was much younger) where sidewalks were definitely in the minority. Huge ass streets full of trafic? Sure. But no place for walking. No people even were it was possible. I think the most we saw were a couple pidgeons and a duck.

1. You ride a bike on the road, not the pavement (sidewalk).
2. The U.S. does in fact have sidewalks, since it was the U.S. that created that term.
