No really it does!
gMail just cracks me up everytime I go into my spam folder to take care of business and you know how they have that tiny ad banner right above the controls? It's a little bit smaller than the flashing banners some of the guys' use in their sigs. Whenever I go to the 'SPAM' folder it always tries to tempt me with various spam products or recipes on how to cook spam.
It's hilarious!

Outside of buisness, it baffles me as to why people would use email still. I can understand notifications from fics/ ext. but emailing people back and forth? When we have MSN AIM Yahoo ext. ? Why?

Personally I know what you mean and generally agree...
That said, there are reasons, even good ones!
1) Some people's workplaces have banned IM clients and blocked the ports so these programs don't work and not everyone knows of or can use the html\java based ones.
2) People may be corresponding to someone in a different country or timezone than their own. I've had long conversations with people in England (f'er instance) and been shocked at them telling me they have to get ready for work now...when its the middle of the night here.
3) Same as above but the person works at nights and their schedule conflicts with the times they can call\chat so they send email and have delayed conversations--its better than nothing.
4) email is free, long distance charges aren't.
5) is a figment of your %$#@ imagination!

I can see that..

It seems like we pay for internet still, and that a hand written snail mail letter would be much more personal then some plain text doc.

Allow me to add number six:

I like email better, other then very, very few folks, I cannot stand to have prolonged IM conversations. Usually I get annoyed with the person after a few moments and close the window.

I multitassk too. Its just that its annoying to have someone constantly ping your messenger window every three or four seconds when you're in a forum and in the middle of a post. Its even worse these days with the 'winks' and the 'nudges' in MSN Messenger.
Now on the other hand if its been more than ten-fifteen minutes and no response and I've pinged you once or twice without response... that's different. If you've gone by more than thirty or forty minutes and not answered me, then I assume you're being ignorant or doing a reboot\lost the internet connection\act of God.

I generally get annoyed if I ask someone to do something for me and then I get no response for 20 minutes+ at a time, at least say you're busy or halfway afk. I have a friend overseas that does that crap constantly, he goes into the other room to game or something in the middle of a conversation, doesn't bothering saying he's going afk, then gets irritable if I ignore him, lol.

First thing you learn in fundraising 101... Snail mail gets a statistically higher amount of money per donation than does email. People like the personal touch, plus it is one hell of a lot easier to delete an email than it is a letter. The tangible quality is what helps.
With that said outside of the fundraising work that I do, I have never used and will most likely never use snail mail for a letter.

Does fundraising actually work still these days?
Maybe I'm just a bastard, but I toss anything that's not a bill, or mail I asked to be sent to me, email the same, and woe betide the idiot that bothers me for money, heh.
What sort of pitch do you use to get funds from the sheep? Or are they just already believers in whatever cause?

It barely works politically, however I don't do political fundraising, it makes me feel like a tool.
I fundraise for my robotics team because each season = 50k that we need for competition/building expenses.
So far this year I've managed to get 20,000 in corporate grants, so I must be doing something right.
But it works on the political level more r less the same way, just with a drastically lower success ratio. Political money doesn't come from your average everyday person; they make the grass-roots campaigns, but if you really want the big bucks you'll sell your vote (and your soul) to a lobbyist or two.

Ah yeah the robotics stuff I could easily see a coporation snagging a logo spot on the robot for the price of building it, provide it looked and performed like a winner

There are 3600 teams... And I got a severe fundraising handicap, our idiot team picked a generic name that 2 other teams had as well, and about 20 other teams had similar sounding ones.
From individual donors I have managed to get another 10,000. Hopefully the adult mentor I am working with will be able to snare the final 20,000 from somewhere; because if I have to write one more letter I will go crazy.
