Good fics of cape comics universes (Marvel, DC, Valiant, etc.)

While finding good fanfiction is pretty hard in itself, it's even harder to find good fanfics of things like Marvel and DC where they are placed like in a million of different categories on FFnet. So I'm looking for good fics from those and since I'm making this post already from other capeverses (like Valiant, various Image stuff, etc.) assuming that those even exist.

Also please, no MCU or DCEU based stuff.

    What I've read:
Batman 1939: Dangers of Being Cold by Stewart M - Great stuff
Metropolitan Man by alexanderwales - Too preachy, as usual with those "rational fics", but was still worth a read Year Zero by wentworth360 - The author completely failed at introducing his changed setting. Dropped.
Spider Man Chronicles Volume One: Origins by MegaMatt09 - It didn't even have capitalised names when I tried to read it. Dropped.

And I'm currently reading Inviolate by Scriviner - It's okay, suffers terribly from Lex' constant expositions. But I enjoy how it takes shots at Loeb's terrible writing.

the Shocker: Legit by Max Landis
    Polarity by Chris Myers

Both of the above are Shocker-centric redemption stories. The first involves a massive conspiracy, the second has zombies.

This one's a one-shot character piece. YMMV, based around Superboy and Canary's mentor-student relationship.

Well, while not exactly good in the sense of a 4/5 story, I still think, for all its problems, With This Ring is still worth a read. 2.5/3 of 5, really.

Probationary Member is a 16 k one-shot that I find fascinating. It's about a pornstar becoming a superhero and the story explores that premise on how it affects her and the league. 4.5/5

The Teen Titans trilogy Ascension by Cyberwraith9 is outstanding. Original take on the Teen Titans cartoon, hands down the best thing DC has done since the Batman animated series from the 80s and it hasn't done anything better since. Two stories are complete, the third unfortunately on hiatus for a while now (okay 4 years /cries) but what there is, is truly excellent. It's similar to Worm in spirit, even if it predates it so if you liked that one, give it a try. The reading order is Avatar, Adaptation and then Absolution. The DLP thread starts with linking Adaptation for some reason but yeah, start with Avatar. Great fights, memorable scenes and lines, excellent characters and tons of character development and progression. The humor was on point when it needed to as well. Tek is still one of my favorite OCs of all time, Bushido is just awesome and I love the character interaction.

The goods news is, the author is still posting stuff, so the chance that he'll still return one day to this is there.

Bylines and Bracelets is a Wonder Woman/Louis Lane fic in a scenario in which Wonder Woman was the one to go to Metropolis instead of Superman and it's pretty good. 25k, finished and a rather good exploration of both characters. 5/5

Escape Artistry is a Batman / Wonder Woman centric short story in which, well, Batman is teaching Wonder Woman how to get out of cuffs and whatnot and it's not nearly as sexual as it sounds. Still set in a continuity in which Wonder Woman loses her powers if bound, and her interaction with the Batfamily is really solid all around. 4/5

Leaving Gotham is a cute story on Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown leaving Gotham to strike out on their own. It's on how they can live and do their thing without being bankrolled by one of the richest people on the planet and without their support-net and the relationship that develops between them. Nothing outstanding but a good read. 3/5

Hinn-Raven is an author who focuses on Steph and she has two good short series that I think are enjoyable to all.

One is Maclusha and Misericordia which are all about an AU in which Steph was raised in the League of Shadows and eventually got to be the bodyguard of Damian. 4/5

The other is A Mouth Full of Blood, A Soul Full of Sorrow and A Face Full of Scars where the basic premise is that Steph takes the place of Jason and becomes the Red Hood. 4/5

Cassandra Cain, The Batgirl is surprisingly enough what it says in the title and a story on Cass and her being Batgirl, fighting crime and dealing with her life. Nothing amazing or earth-shattering but decent enough if you care for the character. 3/5

Hope you find something that interests you in here.

    Thanks for the recs.

I didn't know that Landis wrote fanfics (I know about some short fancomics). I know that /co/ hates him for some reason, but I liked American Alien well enough.

Eh, the more details I hear about Teen Titans cartoon (despite people singing its praises) the less I want to have anything to do with it.

The art of escaping and no Mister Miracle? Feels like a wasted oportunity.

That's actually a great fit for now because just yesterday I was mad again about Bryan Q. Miller's Batgirl being cut short and Nick Spencer's Supergirl never coming to pass.

Less Than Zero by Kenchi618 is a personal favourite.
Summary: It's one thing to enter the world of heroes and villains, it's another thing entirely to find your way back out again. That's a bitter truth to swallow when you want no part of the life to begin with. A hasty decision from a young man with his back against the wall sends him down a path of which there is no return. OC main character.

If you're familiar with any of Kenchi's other work, the protagonist is similar, as usual. But to me it feels like he's refined his work and personally I think this is his best story. It's basically the origins of an up and coming morally grey character based in Gotham, but he gets around. He's done a great job capturing multiple character voices for the various heroes and villains. I remember not touching this for so long because of the OC but if you do get around to reading it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's in the library, I think, or up for review if memory serves.

The only stuff I have is smut. That and really high quality 12 page porn parodies about the Marvelverse.

Batman 1939 has a sequel: swimming in the Styx which is batman and Wonder Woman and is very, very good.

There's also a 1930s superman short story I enjoyed a lot after reading batman 1939, I think it was linked here on DLP, and I'll edit it in if I can find it.

I'm reading this now and I have a very important question - do we get a better Batgirl later on (well, at least making her younger should prevent DickBabs ship, which is funny considering that this ship was started being seriously in the first place due to making her younger post-Crisis).

I'm not sure how deep you are, and not clear on what you mean by a better Batgirl, but she takes more of a background role. Barbara is probably more important than Batgirl. There's also no hint of a Dick relationship. She may reemerge later, but I don't remember her being particularly pivotal.

I meant Cass or well, anyone else than Barbara. Babs only was good as Batgirl in Bronze Age (where she was an adult) and in her Year One. Maybe this fic will handle her better, but at the beginning she is incredibly bland.

I believe she's meant to represent the good path for Max, not overtly so or anything, but it's subtly, but kinda obviously, there. So no, just Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. I thought she was fine. From the sounds of it you might be more predisposed to disliking her, so her lack of a major role may be a minor plus for a character you don't enjoy.

Hey, it's not that I don't like her. I just don't like her as a Batgirl. Oracle though...

Origins by Redbyrd - I haven't read this in years, but I remember it being good. It's a prequel to the Teen Titans cartoon written before the show actually made an origin episode, but besides featuring those characters it doesn't take much after the show that I remember.

They might (probably) know something I don't, but I liked Chronicle and the Death & Return of Superman video, and mostly liked American Alien except for a few things.

This is pretty good. I've been a bigger fan of Kenchi than most though. The development of the hero OC is decent, he doesn't feel too powerful. The biggest issue is how many hot chicks are involved with the OC. Honestly there feels like a bunch of the female superheroes are into the OC.

I'd honestly say that Ascension is so far from the cartoon show that you should give it a try. It's pretty great if you're a fan of the Titans. I've reread it multiple times just because it's an enjoyable read.

Landis gets a lot of hate because he acts like a know it all. I enjoy a lot of his stuff. Both Shocker: Legit and Polarity are pretty fun reads if you like Shocker. Canvas is also really solid as a one shot.

    Gotham Knights of Middle Earth

Crossover involving Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain hitting up Middle Earth.

Its 3.5/5 imo. Tim/Cass pairing. Not epic, but good stories are so hard to find in this genre.

I read that one years ago and while it is a decent enough time waster, IIRC, it is one of these stories where the presence of the crossover characters changes absolutely nothing about the LotR series. That even though Cass and Tim are there and involved, things end up exactly the same as in canon, even if with a slightly different paint job.

That's how I remember it, at least.
