    I partly disagree with this because the Dursleys would have feared repercussions anyways. Unless they planned on killing HP before he grew up into an adult wizard, they would have been scared HP would take revenge eventually and wouldn't have treated him with such a degree of physical abuse. That said, we have to suspend our disbelief because in this story the Dursleys are just plain nuts, well more nuts than in JKR's world anyways. But your suggestion has merit.     Acting crazy in front of Hogwarts students isn't that big of a deal on the political arena, b/c the foreign dignitaries won't be investigating such and such. Really the only exposure they have to HP is at the first task and the newspapers.     @relic: HP isn't that 'openly crazy' or Hermione would have never trusted him with her books, nor would Albus have exerted his political influence to free Harry and keep him freed (actively) after the 'debacle' of the first task, nor would the student body have applauded him on his entry into the great hall in that one scene. Or rather his craziness is borderline tolerable, which in the scheme of things isn't that big of a deal considering most wizards are borderline crazy anyways.

Also I am emphasizing the politician might want to use HP's display - which I argue bolsters the ministry's image in the eyes of the international governments - to further their own agenda such as incredibly important cauldron thickness treaty.     My suspicion is Rowling used air as the element for the first task (dragons fly don't they?), water as the element for the second task, and land (the maze is on land, no other challenge save the first one is but the first one is clearly to do with flight as Harry flies and dragon flies, its all about flying!) as the third task.
