Great start into the day when I saw this updated, reread some chapters and reaffirmed to myself this has one of my favorite OC's in fanfiction. Normally filtering them out via scryer for example is the first thing I do.

Golden moment for example how he couldn't believe who Harry really was, since nobody would ever stash anything important with muggles! And this is the first time I see where Dumbledores genius with putting Harry to the Dursleys shines a little through. Petri seems honestly confused, Albus played him without really trying to.

Also suddenly there is some kind of backstory hinted for Rosenkol, apparently he didn't take Petri seriously when they first met either and surely Petri didn't go out of his way to teach a house-elf magic.

Okay, so... yeah, this is great. BUT I agree with those who said that there's not really enough here to rate. It's a great start to a story but I feel like we're still setting things up, which is fine, but until we actually run into something to drive a plot I'm hesitant to jump fully on board.

That said the writing quality so far indicates this will manage at least a 4/5, and maybe more if the plot gets off the ground and goes somewhere interesting.

My favorite aspect of this story, the part that got me to check out the other things by this author... is that they write Harry in a way that I love to see but rarely find.

He's a clever little shit, and I love it. It reminds me of early canon when Harry would mouth off to Snape or make an intuitive leap about something or other. I was hooked on this story from that first meeting in the park when Harry had no idea what a mudblood was, or if he might be one, but he knew that the creepy dude hanging out in a children's play park thought it was bad so he just went with a flat out "nope."

Hermione might be brilliant in canon, but that sort of intuition and cleverness is what makes Harry different. It crops up elsewhere in the story too, with Harry not caring so much about information as the fact that he has it and can do whatever it is he needs to do. It's how Harry recognizes when he is supposed to already know what something is, so he plays along until he figures it out.

It's a great characterization for Harry, I think. And the OC is interesting too. He's an evil necromancer, as Harry notes on several occasions, but he seems to take the Master/Apprentice thing seriously and genuinely attempts to teach Harry things. He's an asshole but didn't seem to take things "too far" with Harry in general, at least until the whole BWL bit came out and he flipped his shit.

So yeah. I stand by what I said about this being too early to rate. But it's 4/5 material with potential to go up to 5/5. I'm tempted to give it a 3/5 because there's not really enough story yet, but that's not the story's fault.

I feel like I should point this out, this is at the top of the author's bio:

I quite like this as well, but not getting my hopes up it will go much of anywhere. Love to be proven wrong though.

I've read a few of the comments above. People seem to like it. The originality of the magic especially. I always love a story which attempts to delve into the magic system. Would you guys recommend giving it a whirl despite the likelihood of it getting abandoned?

This has updated a handful of times since the last post, and well, I adore it. The author is showing magic that I've never read before in fanfiction and it's just a fuckin fun trek. No spoilers, but give it a read if you stopped following it. It's an easy 4, even if it's following trends that show it will never get finished - we're not even really to Hogwarts, or I suppose, Durmstrang age, yet.

A downside, it appears to follow "intent based" magic.

I am also interested to see if the blood purity thing has any basis in reality in Blood Crest canon or if it's just Master Petri. It also has such an fun rendition of the value of phoenix feathers.

The latest chapter has a nice trope turned on its head. Vampires and other dark creatures fleeing from mainland Europe where they are not allowed wands anymore - the various Ministries were tightening regulations - to Britain, where if they identify themselves as "half-human," nobody either cares or can tell a difference.

The story has been getting regular weekly updates for quite some time now.

One of the thing most likeable about the story is the goblins. They are not too friendly nor are they too aggressive. There are some odd ones too. A recent chapter pays a nice tribute to Professor Flitwick.

The characterization of Harry in this story is definitely one of the best. It is 4/5 from me.

    Love it!

The master/apprentice stuff between Harry and Petri is great and he (Petri) seems like a 'realistic' Dark wizard, at least as far as portrayal goes.

I adore the deliciously cruel (for Harry) death of the sympathetic goblin character, Snipseed, and just the portrayal of the goblins in general; they really seem spot on and I like that the vampire, Silviu, isn't just a cookie-cutter 'good-and-friendly Dark creature', and I'm interested to see what designs he has on Harry.

The world building, especially the spell used to call the Aurors, is nice. (This is the first fic I've ever seen that does that.)

Not sure how to vote but once I figure it out - if I'm allowed to - i'll give this fic a 4/5

I feel like this story is actively unique, which is a bit of a rarity in the two-decade-old world of Harry Potter fanfiction. It's also fantastic.

Beyond that vague praise, I can't really say more: it's still in the early stages of plot, and I think that's the most likely avenue for it to fall off the rails. As is, I'll give it a 5/5, with the caveat that it's preliminary and could dip to just being merely good depending on how the author goes from here.

This got updated, apparently, there's only one chapter left before the school starts, which I have to admit I'm quite excited for. I just hope the author can go back to his update schedule in the summer; that was pretty nice.

I'm not sure how to feel about the whole Horcrux thing, they're supposed to be some of the most obscure and some of the blackest and most evil of magics out there. Little bit skeptical that even a necromancer would know of them, let alone be able to make one for another person, due to how rare the knowledge of them is.

Maybe we can put it down to specialism in his area. For a muggle example, it's a bit like how most people aren't going to know about obscure areas of Maths unless they're either a Maths specialist in that field or someone like Terrance Tao.

This updated a few days ago. Finally got our meeting with Dumbledore. I like that the author is portraying Voldemort and Dumbledore as significant wizards. I’m so used to authors having their OC bash them and make them out to be incompetent fools despite being the two most powerful characters in the series.

Also another plus the author says in his note that he finally has a plot beyond learning magic. So, this is definitely my favorite updating series at the moment.

I really hope Harry doesn't end up in Slytherin. I'd hate to see bff Malfoy ruin a promising story.

Too young for enchanting so he learns about necromancy. Absolutely golden.

The opening - of Harry meeting Petri - happens far too quickly and breaks my suspension of disbelief. But, you know what? That's cool with me. It's just a vehicle to move forwards with the story. I can understand that.

There are plenty of original ideas here, and the author has a refreshing blend of compliance with canon ideals and fanon constructs. This is very definitely an AU, but an AU which fits almost seamlessly into the background of canon. Petri's relationship with Harry is interesting, and it's clear that at no point is he a good person. He's an unapologetic dick. But better than the Dursleys, so Harry's willing to make it work. To some extent.

My only complaint is that updates are relatively slow and we still haven't reached Hogwarts proper after 100k words - but the most recent update was in April this year, so I'm hoping we'll see more traction soon.

    5/5

Finally, Harry is at Hogwarts. I don't want to seem like I'm complaining since this is one of my very favorite updating stories, but man. I'm glad that after 110k words, we're finally there. I can't wait to see how the story takes off.

This felt like a pretty poor filler chapter, but I'm glad to see things moving forwards. The yellow train compartment and garlic allergy were nice touches, but a great deal of this felt almost as if it had been lifted directly from canon. Certainly bits of the conversation with Hermione felt word-for-word.

If it gets us where we're going, that's all that matters. I can't say I was enthusiastic about the amount of OCs appearing towards the end of the chapter. Especially Oliver Rivers. There's already an Oliver Wood. I hope Ravenclaw Oliver gets eaten by a feral house elf trying to reclaim his erkling ancestry.

Oliver Rivers is canon. Or at least Pottermore-canon.

I agree it was something of a filler chapter, but it was necessary filler: Harry had to get to Hogwarts somehow. Hopefully the next chapter picks up with the original material.
