Wow. That was... awesome.

I did expect more though. Mostly it was a bunch of old dudes hugging and weeping - and Fuk Li.

Fun fact: Google honored Curiosity in it's "googledoodle" of the day:

I'm super-excited by this, as by most things space-related. Can't wait for the images that will come when Curiosity's main cameras are up and running.
It's great that NASA has managed to generate tons of positive publicity from this. Hopefully, this will help them secure more funding for amazing missions in the future. As of now, they're tragically underfunded. |

Curiosity's first (of hopefully many) high resolution image. Looks pretty cool. Personally I'm looking forward to the 3D images yet to come...

I don't know what you mean by 3d images? Images are, by nature, 2d. Do you mean images in other directions? Panoramas? They'll be pretty similar to this anyways. This is pretty awesome too though.

Exactly what I said - anaglyphic 3D images.

Ah ok. Well, that's not too exciting since there won't be too much difference as it's mostly just plain terrain. So the 3d effect will be minimal.

You know, I for one am perfectly happy to view my images in normal 2D. 3D is just too gimmicky with the glasses.

I tried researching a bit more into it - because I doubt NASA would put up things just for fun/acc. to movie trends in such an expensive project. Not totally clear, but apparently it's supposed to help in figuring out the spatial configuration of objects around or something like that.

This is too big to upload, but it's too cool not to post:
First 360 degrees panorama picture Notice the spots where the boosters of the sky crane disturbed the martian dust! And the fantastic fact that Curiosity is sitting inside a 150 km wide crater, with the crater walls looking like a circular mountain range from within. Awesome! |
