The Great Toad Sage of Brockton Bay Worm/Naruto

Title: The Great Toad Sage of Brockton Bay
Author: Green Eyed Typhoon
Rating: M
Genre: AU Crossover
Status: WIP
Fandom: Worm / Naruto
Pairings: None
Summary: Taylor Hebert triggers with a very odd, if useful, set of powers. With the ability to summon the Toads of Mount Myoboku she enters the cape scene with both the aspirations to be a hero and the backing of a family. Based on the previous Toad summoners, she has a lot to live up too. Best get started….

I searched and didnt see this posted here. Hopefully I didnt overlook it.

Anyway, I was kind of torn between "almost recommend" and this forum for the fic. In the end, I figured I would put it here and get some other opinions. Especially as I came to this from the Naruto side and not the WORM side, how the author integrates it with WORM (something I would need other opinions on) might be the difference between whether its just a guilty pleasure read or not.

Like the description says, the plot is essentially that Taylor's powers trigger as the ability to summon the Toads from Naruto's world. She doesn't have Chakra, just toad summoning. The author has put some limitations on it (so she isnt for example able to summon the Boss Toad, as she isn't powerful enough. Yet)

On the Plus Side:
1) I came to this fic as someone who had never heard of WORM. The Naruto side got me to open it. It was well enough written to draw me in despite that and actually sparked an interest in WORM. As a result of this fic, ive started branching into the WORM fandom.
2) Despite what seemed like a silly premise, it isn't a crack fic but takes itself somewhat seriously.
3) The Author really progresses. The first few chapters are OK but didn't blow me away much. However, by the middle of the story I had noticed real improvement and by the end I was enjoying it a lot.
4) On a side note, I thought the author handled different POVs pretty well. I enjoyed having the chance to look at Taylor through the eyes of other outside characters with their own agendas and bias.
5) The author does a good job of not making the toads *Too* overpowered I think. They have limitations and are not always a trump card. Taylor did not seem overpowered in this to me

On the Other Hand
1) I don't know about the WORM side (not familiar enough with the fandom) but on the Naruto side theres probably a little suspension of disbelief on some parts of canon to make this work. Theres a certain "alien space bat" feel to the opening and you just have to accept that somehow Taylor can summon the toads.
2) It took me a little while to really get attached to the fic. Though that may be due to my lack of familiarity with WORM.
3) There were a couple of side storylines that didn't pull me in. Though again that might be my lack of familiarity with WORM

Admittedly, not the best story of all time, but I had a lot of fun reading this.

My review from SV:

Quote:
So, I admit, I had stopped reading the updates to this story two years ago. But after seeing the update, decided to go for a reread and I'll be damned if this isn't actually one of the best Worm stories out there. No bashing, a balanced and somewhat accurate Taylor, no flanderization, not much use of terrible Worm clichés.

Unfortunately, it does use some. I'll be honest, I always die a little bit inside whenever I see the "Clockblocker makes a joke and Vista hits him for it" bit. Vista would rather cut off her own arm than appear unprofessional and childish in front of her teammates, so squeeing when seeing cute things or hitting teammates, even for comedy purposes is something she'd never do.

But honestly, apart from that, it's been really solid. I love that Danny barely appears in the story, as he's usually poison to Worm stories. We didn't have to deal with the bullies in any capacity so far and I cannot explain how ecstatic that makes me. 99% of the other alt Taylor fics would have the usual confrontation in Piggot's office already, with Sophia either going to the Simurgh zone or juvie. How refreshing that it's just not addressed, that it's a big city and that they won't interact quite so fast.

I am also impressed by your Clockblocker who is still a bit more joke-y than I'd like, seeing as he should still stress out because of his sick father but honestly, you didn't make him a caricature and his struggle to balance being a Ward and doing what he felt right was handled well and I really appreciated Aegis just stepping up, reminding us that the Wards are for the most part admirable kids.

Same with all the Protectorate capes, really. Just well done.

I was a bit iffy on including Greg, since I honestly don't see his appeal as a character and for some reason the SB/SV crowd keeps putting him in fics with powers but yours has done it the best I have seen. He had his own little arc and was otherwise a background character, which handled it all really well. He has an interesting ability as well, makes me think of that one girl from Big Hero Six. His relationship with Taylor is also rather interesting, actually. Hating himself for his cowardice and looking away, while trying to make up and not overstep his grounds. I don't think I'd be able to handle a romantic relationship there (and I don't think Taylor could either) but I would like to see them becoming friends and moving past the school stuff at a later point, as long as that isn't rushed but then again, this is Taylor and making friends and allies with people like that is one of her specialties.

I love the Lily and Hisako dynamic and Hisako especially is a fantastic character. I love everything about the two and I honestly would read a 300k fic about them and how they just live their daily normal lives. Really hoping to see more of them. In fact, really hoping that Taylor will found her own team and that those two, among others like Parian and Tattletale will kinda be in it.

I love that you went out of your way to make changes. I love the Undersiders but your decision to have them fall apart off-screen and really only use Tattletale for the Coil conflict and for the Taylor Lisa friendship was the absolute correct one. Again, most fics tend to use them terribly. I am also super glad Glory Girl is not this bloodthirsty maniac who loses her shit the second she sees a villain.

The characters over all are handled really well. I love the toads and the feeling of family, confidence and unity they project and of course of sheer weird badassery. The throwbacks to Naruto are few enough that they are charming whenever we see one and I'm super glad you have gone with the hard limitation on chakra and its use.

I'd like to also compliment you on taking a page from the Worm canon and not rushing things. We are 160k words in and no Endbringers or Slaughterhouse9 in sight (honestly, hoping that at least one of them won't appear in the fic). It's nice to see you taking your time, developing Taylor and her presence in the city and how she cultivates her relationships.

So yeah. I had a blast reading this. The toads make everything better, the original stuff like Revenant and other capes helped flesh out the city and keep things fresh and the changes to Taylor alone caused believable butterflies and no one behaved like an unreasonable idiot. The action is engaging and Gama makes me laugh with his bad one liners.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

I started reading this and while I *can* follow it well enough with my limited knowledge of Worm (I'm up through Chapter 5 of the fanfic and haven't read any of Worm)... I feel like there's not enough Naruto elements to keep me invested.

Is the only crossover aspect from Naruto the toads being summoned? I admit it's a great idea for a crossover and I'm 100% behind it... just not for a fandom (Worm) that I am not invested in.

@CheddarTrek Yeah, it's only the toads. No chakra for any of the humans or sage mode, although the toads certainly still have that. No other Naruto characters. It's what i like about it, tbh. but yeah, if you are reading this as a mainly Naruto fan, don't think it will be enough because while the toads play an important role, it is very much a Worm story.

I just spent 20 minutes writing out an idea for a Harry Potter / Naruto crossover using the whole "summons are a thing that connect dimensions" concept.

I'll never write it. Probably.

But daaaaaamn. It'd be fun and I think I could make it work. :3

So yeah. Kudos to the author for the idea, even if I'd rather the primary fandom be a different one.

And thank you for the info on the story. I won't continue reading but it was worth the time anyway. I won't rate because I didn't read enough of it.

Surprisingly good story. I went in expecting crack or low-tier fiction, but it's pretty fun.

Some complaints: Taylor getting too good at h2h combat too fast, the tattoo girl's power being a bit too OP (like a deadlier, faster to switch out, simultaneous multiple creature Genesis), and some of the plot feeling a little silly or nonsensical. The fic isn't crack-- but it isn't afraid of approaching the weird line and occasionally crossing over.

The positives are: rapid and unashamed divergence from canon, decent characterization (except for Taylor, who feels a little off for hard to articulate reasons), snappy dialogue, fun action scenes, and the sheer joy of giant ninja toads in Worm.

4/5
