The word "seemingly".

Don't tell me that it "seemingly appealed to everyone."

Did it or did it not? Don't play these useless games. Worst word ever.

I'll just post this here because I was bored.

Quote:
The audience seemingly agreed with him, even those he counted among his enemies. That he thought in words like seemingly, however, led him to believe his instincts had picked up on an undercurrent that went deeper than the mere surface of a clap; that also noticed the subtle reluctance, the interweaving of eagerness and dismissiveness at once; that relied more on a sense beyond this world than acute hearing or observation.

No way about it, this seeming approval told him, things would get hot before long.

He fingered his wand holster and smiled into the clapping mass. Let them try.

a) boredome; b) the underlying point that it's all about how, not about what, and that applies to seemingly as well.

Though I agree that this is the kind of adverb that has to be used even more sparingly than other adverbs, because it tends to weaken the sentence if it's not used well.

I'm not sure if anyone else has said this yet, but I hate dialogue written in single quotes. It's just ugly and I'll quit reading a fic immediately if an author formats it like that. I've never seen it in a published book, but apparently it's a standard in some other countries.

It's standard in the UK.

I see this now and then, and in older British novels the authors do more often use them... But I don't think it is the standard anymore - I was taught to use double marks for speech (would have been about 1997/8), and from who I know locally, it's the same for at least 5 years previous to that too.

It could just be the traditional way of doing it, I guess, but I'm pretty certain it's not English standard.

I feel mixed about single quotes. Sometimes I feel double looks a little messy and takes up more room that it really should, but single quotes clash with apostrophes. If not for that I'd probably lean to singles.
