Mininova limits its activities to Content Distribution service

Quote:
Sauce

Hi all,

Today is an important day in the history of Mininova. From now on, we are limiting Mininova.org to our Content Distribution service. By doing so, we comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht of last August.

Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service. According to the verdict (Dutch link) we have to prevent uploads of torrents to Mininova that refer to certain titles or to similar-looking titles. We’ve been testing some filtering systems the last couple of months, but we found that it’s neither technically nor operationally possible to implement a 100% working filter system. Therefore, we decided that the only option is to limit Mininova to Content Distribution torrents from now on. We are still considering an appeal at this moment.

We launched our Content Distribution service in 2007. This service allows producers and artists to easily publish and distribute their content for free through Mininova. The launch of Content Distribution has proven to be a success. Countless content owners have used Content Distribution to distribute their content (e.g. albums and documentaries) for free to millions of users. For example, the Dutch band Silence is Sexy released their complete album on Mininova and received the Interactive Award 2009 for doing so. The Dutch television broadcaster VPRO decided to start using Content Distribution in 2009 in order to distribute documentaries.

We would like to thank you for your support. Especially everyone that contributed to Mininova receives a big “thank you!” for the effort! We hope to keep welcoming you on Mininova and our other projects (e.g. Snotr, Dispostable).

Thanks! The Mininova staff
Anyone going to Mininova's noticed a looooot of nothing... Why? Mininova has gone Legit.

Simple solution-Newsgroups. Unlimited access is 11 USD/month for better speeds than you almost ever see on torrents, plus a much wider selection of content.

I will miss Mininova for somethings though, they had some nice old games you just can't find anymore.

I know what you mean. I've had to use them for the duration of Demonoid's troubles.

You're missing the point of using torrents though. FREE.

The next few months will probably be hardest for downloaders. But soon, a much better and more efficient system will stomp over the opposition.

Like what happened when torrents replaced Napster.

“Friends,” said Remus, reaching for James’s hand.

Eh, that's irksome. Still, I've got Demonoid and btjunkie.org if I'm looking for torrents, so I'm set.

And frankly, Mininova was going downhill for a while.

Deminoid has been down since September, though I have heard that there have been signs of life lately.

I never really used mininova for my completely legal downloading needs, so no loss here though it will be interesting to see what takes its place.

I still use Piratebay, which is moving towards magnet links instead of tracker based bittorrents.

You're missing the point of using torrents though. FREE.
Meh, if you insist on "FREE", here's something to think about. (Don't know if this is allowed or not. Not copyright infringement, nor pointing towards specific files. All sites can be used for legal purposes.)

torrentbytes.net -"Private" (not really) site with good content and excellent speeds.
http://bitsnoop.com/ - Best search out there for trackers. Indexes almost all public sites that I know of.

For those who don't mind paying the $11/month or $96/year for unlimited usenet access, here's the deal.
NZBs for the usenet.

For ebooks IRC is obviously the best solution. I actually wrote a fairly long idiot-proof guide for using mirc to grab ebooks. I won't post it here, as it's fairly long and would take me a while to convert for this forum. Feel free to PM me if you want it however.

I hated newsgroups way, way, way back in the day. Hunting down files that tended to be split into a fuckload of zipped parts, often being unable to find a few of the zips was not fun. No idea if that's changed at all now.

The 180gb download price of 25$ seems to be a pretty good deal though.

What can I say, I'm a believer =/. I originally payed over $20/month for access for a while. When I found the 11 deal I felt like an idiot. (Yes, sounding even more like a bad salesman I know.)

BTW midknight-You don't need to manually hunt down headers anymore. NZB files make it pretty much like using torrents. Download the nzb and load it up in your usenet client of choice. The nzb acts like a .torrent file, pointing the client towards the headers without you having to grab them manually. Much easier.

Well, fuck. I mostly use Piratebay anyway but that site has A LOT of downtime. Also, Mininova had some torrents Piratebay didn't have and vice versa.

I'm tending towards just isohunt to search them all now, Piratebay's search engine has gotten shitty since they moved the servers, always get search engine overloaded message, which prompts me to just open 6 windows until one finally loads through... which everyone else is probably doing overloading the engine, lol.

Ah, that takes 90% of the fucking annoyance out of it then. Do they still have files go missing? I'd often see x/500, and I'd wind up having to message back and forth trying to pick up files one server would never upload, but another would.

And security. I stick with torrents with a fuckload of stuff blocked on Peerblock, downloading off a server seems like it'd be a really easy way to have a nice letter sent to the house with a fine attached, lol.

The usenet provider I use (Astraweb) keeps absolutely no logs and allows encryption of traffic. Basically the only ones who know what you're downloading are you and your ISP.

Yes files still go missing, but the solution to that is par2 files. Basically "replacement" files included in almost every release, that can be used to replace the missing data. It's a fairly complicated explanation, but they work very well. Even so, you normally won't see any missing or corrupted files if they were uploaded in the last 200 days or so.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I can't see paying for it anytime soon, unless isohunt and piratebay go ass up though

Torrentreactor is a preety good site with a good search engine, granted that it doesn't have the really rare stuff, but it's preety good and it's free.
