    Hi everyone!

I found DLP through a story on fanfiction.net called Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived. The story is abandoned, but the comments mentioned that a few more chapters had been posted here. All I have been able to find on it is a link that does not work for me. I've been waiting for 48 hours to read these next chapters, and as you fellow bookworms know, that feels like an eternity when they're just out of your reach. Can someone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?

It's clearly displayed on that forum that you need a minimum of five posts to view wba. Not shitposts either. Valuable, thought out posts.

Work by author is meant for criticism and help for the author, not just a place to view a few extra chapters and for you to then never look back.

It requires 5 posts to view anything contained by "Work By Author". You know, there is blatant, red annotation at DLP's front page.

I see it on the front page now, I just hadn't scrolled down yet. Unfortunately for me I have no idea how forums like this work, including how to find my way around and view responses to my posts. Sue me.

    Thanks for letting me know.

The irony of course is that posting this thread has given pumpkinskittle two of her required posts towards viewing the wba.

I think the site admin should raise the requirement to 100 posts to view WBA just to annoy the noobs.

Or just ban whoever asks a question about this without looking at the bright red annotation.

Goodness there is no love for support here is there?

I had a link directly to the story. It told me I couldn't view it. I did not know of specific sections called "Work by Author" or that this story was even in that section. All I got for asking questions was rude replies. Good luck keeping a dying website alive with that kind of community

I made the notices about as blatant as I could without using blink tags.

The peanut gallery aside, the spirit is pretty well represented. DLP does not want a lot of lurking members to freeload. WBA is for DLP authors to workshop their stories, not to allow unproven members to read.

If you aren't willing to contribute at least occasionally, then DLP doesn't want you to partake. Simple.

I appreciate the "workshop" sentiment, but if a story is abandoned and is only available for access through these forums, doesn't that justification for keeping it hidden and difficult to access kind of fail? I'm not trying to start an argument, and I'm not interested in violating site rules just to read five chapters of fanfiction, but I am curious about the rationale here.

Please forgive me, I'm an attorney and this kind of curiosity is kind of part of my job. I edit things for my wife in an academic field and my colleagues, so I anticipate being able to contribute in a grammatical and structural sense to 'betaing' fics in the work by author section. Given the horrifying grammar and spelling endemic to the fanfiction world, I honestly feel a little compelled to help, so I'm behind that goal 100%.

I apologise for the late bump, but I think bumping an old thread with a related question is better than bloating the board with an unnecessary thread essentially continuing this one. If this was a bad move for this forum, I'll gladly start a new thread in the future.

Obviously, I can only speak for myself, but imo no, it fucking doesn't. You're not owed the rest of the chapters. The only reasoning failing here is yours. And if you're really open to actually contributing to the community, don't make one of the 5 required posts a whinefest about it. Fucking hell.

I don't think it's accurate to describe my comment as a "whinefest." And who said anyone was owed anything? It's obvious that authors owe nothing to anyone regarding their creative works, and I never suggested anything otherwise. You apparently didn't understand my question. I'll rephrase: if a story is dead, or abandoned, etc then there is no purpose to critiquing chapters theoretically written for future publication. If that is the rationale to keep them behind a wall of some kind, then isn't it not a logical reason to do so?

If the author doesn't want them publicly available, that's a sufficient reason. I suppose you could say that the fact that they are posted in that forum suggests that the author's intent is to keep access limited, and I think that reasoning is much stronger.

I plan to join the community and help editing when I'm home at a desktop - assuming that others in the community, at least, are at least marginally more welcoming than you. The mods seem to run a tight ship so far, which bodes well.

The rationale behind keeping the Authors work "behind a wall" is because the author chose to put them there. It's nothing to do with whether or not they plan to request critique of further chapters.

    - Author writes chapters of a story
    - Author feels chapters could do with critique and posts them in the WbA section
    - Story is later abandoned

At no point does the the abandoning or hiatus of a story then mean all chapters should become publicly available.

We didn't decide to restrict it, the author did, we only provided the means. It could be that they're now happy to release their old drafts publicly, but that decision is theirs alone; we shouldn't ordinarily make it for them.

We also don't know if a story truly is abandoned. That's a hard call to get right. Seeing as we're talking about HP&tBWL, I wouldn't call that abandoned. The Santi stopped frequently updating due to studying law, but he didn't stop updating altogether. I won't be surprised if he releases more chapters in the future.

I do not believe the requirement to have 4 extra posts beyond the spam filter to be difficult to achieve.

From the beginning of the Work by Author forums, only registered members were allowed to view them. The change to prevent access below 5 posts ensures that new users do more than register and consume but instead engage with the community first.

As for HP&BWL, it's The Santi's choice not to post it elsewhere. If he felt strongly about it, he could do so. DLP's staff makes choices based on our belief in what is best for our community as a whole vs. the small slice of consumers who want access to more of a story which has not been updated in some time.

However, it does raise the question of creating a set of forums specifically for authors who want their works visible by all members and guests without the post requirements. The DLP staff will consider this.
