So new short story out, I've only read feviews and spoiler since I doubt I will buy it untill it comes bundled, but it sounds pretty good and gives a lot of world building on the winter court.

    Anyone got it?

I got it. It's pretty good, all things considered. I'll summarize it under spoiler tags:

The short story covers Molly's first mission as the Winter Lady--she's off to Alaska to meet with a group of Native American Fae aligned to Winter, who stopped paying their tribute several years ago. Maeve's been dicking around and not giving a fuck about her job, so she has to work through the backlog--and, in a more immediate sense, prove to Winter that she's not a punk ass bitch.

So she goes to the town and very quickly notices something off, namely a bunch of really weird sailors. In the process of encountering them, she also runs into Ramirez, who got a tip off from Elaine to check things out and is there to respond to White Council business. The two make a quick connection between the weirdness and the lack of Tribute and investigate.

Turns out, the Cult of the Sleeper's behind it all. The Sleeper's an Old One, straight out of Lovecraft, in that it's a being that gains more power over the world with human knowledge of it. It's probably Cthulhu, from the description, and that's to HP's books, it has enough power to occasionally infect people, hollowing out the person and putting in a tentacle monster. They've been fucking with the town and, among other things, have taken the Fae groups kids. They contacted Maeve about it and got ignored, so now it's up to Molly; there will be no tribute until they're saved.

So Molly and Carlos get to it, kicking ass and taking names. They throw down with a bunch of sorcerer-level monsters and kick ass and we get to see the new Winter Lady cut loose, even as Carlos slaughters his way in to take the kids out. In the end, the two team up to save the day and everything's fine; the Fae are reunited with their children and Tribute is guaranteed. Then, it's back to the hotel for Molly and Carlos, to get rid of some of that sexual tension and we fade to black...

Only to come right back, to Molly in the shower, washing off the blood. She realizes what's wrong a moment later and rushes back to find Carlos, who she brutally maimed, and who's broken and bleeding on the floor, leaving her to stare in horror. She calls for Mab, demanding an explanation, and gets it.

It's a Mantle thing. Maiden, Mother, and Crone--and Molly's the Maiden. There are things she can't do and banging is one of them, at risk of harming or destroying her Mantle, so whenever she tries to be with a Man, the Mantle defends itself, Winter style. Mab, of course, let her learn this the hard way, at Carlos' expense; and the kicker is, the Winter Lady's Mantle still comes with all the lust that the Knight does.

(This also casts a different light on a lot of Maeve's offers over the years...not sure how well it fits with them all, honestly, but okay.)

Molly tries to help Carlos, but Mab's insistent she finish her job and collect her tribute--she argues with her and gets her to remain with him until the White Council's healers arrive to help, etc. Then she goes to collect the tribute, and only then realizes what it is.

The tribute is...the children, meant to be part of the next generation of Winter's soldiers, manning the Outer Gates until they're no longer needed--and the only time soldiers of Winter aren't needed on the Gates is when they're dead.

    Ain't that a bitch.

How does that work with Fix and Lily, I feel like it was heavily implied they were together.

Dunno. Like I said, I've no idea how this meshes with some of Maeve's previous portrayals. Like, was the SK baby offer an assassination attempt?

More to the point, 'celibate' was not a term I would have readily guessed was attached to Maeve. Unless she gave into Nemesis on the side condition of finally being able to get laid or something, because several hundred years hyped up on Winter horniness coupled with an inability to have sex sounds kind of miserable.

So Maeve was dangling a bait in front of Harry through out the books?

On the one hand, my waifu remains pure~

On the other hand, it's inconsistent with what we've seen prior. I'm terribly conflicted.

It's a weird revelation. I mean, it works somehow, but instead of being one of these missing puzzles that finally explain some things, it makes you question if it really fits with previous information.

But now we can all guess what probably will turn out to be a big part of an ascension ritual and who is going to be involved. ;)

I bet the winter knight can by pass most if not all of the queens in built defences, it would not recognize the knight as a threat.

To be fair, summer and winter courts are different. Summer represents life for a lot of mythologies, so the rules for their lady might be different than for winter. Remember the courts aren't just about hot vs cold, but the winter courts job is to protect the universe from Outsiders. Summer's job is protect the universe from Winter. A soldier (winter) has no business being pregnant and there are lots of symbolic connections between someone being cold and not being open to affection. Winter for a long time has been about being bitterly hungry, unable to do the things you want to do, and being a generally dark and basic time where your primary concerns are just surviving until it ends. Where does having actual sex fall into that equation? Hungering for sex (for warmth, for affection, for family) is very 'winter' to me, but actually getting it? That doesn't seem to 'winter'.

Syed has a piont. When Maeve was tempting Dresden at his birthday party it seemed implied that the knight and lady had a historic precedent. I'll have to look it up.

I don't know how to get it! :)

I can't find it mentioned in the Wikipedia entry for The Dresden Files; it's not listed on Jim Bucher's site (not on his Dresden Files page anyway); the first page of a Google search can't find it; and my local library catalogue doesn't have it. Not with the title 'Cold Cases'.

Can you give me a pointer to where it is referenced on the web, so I can at least get a handle on it and how to acquire it? Cheers.

It's in the Anthology 'Shadowed Souls', which was edited by Jim.
