Arguably, Remus is the only one out of the available characters who has a "beast mode."

Neville is a legit character. One of the few in canon who’s character I really liked.

Also, I LOLed at the last question. Well played Taure. Well played.

    'Twas a joke. ;)

I‘m also fond of Neville, both the canon version and how he can be interpreted and developed in (good) fanfics. He‘s certainly one of the side characters with the most depth.

    Lol while you can, hee-hee.

@Xiph0 I voted OotP as favorite book this time, but it's pretty much a flip between it and GoF, for all the reasons upthread. I don't get why people snark at the book which gave us the best window into a broader wizarding world, given how JK's worldbuilding (in broad strokes, if not fine details) is a point of praise for HP.

To get back on topic (or thereabouts), I am actually surprised at how comparatively few people consider the side books canon. I have found them to be a great resource. Maybe they are just that – a resource, a guideline. Yet, considering they were put into written form by JKR throughout the run of or shortly after the original seven books, I would have expected a higher number than ~40%. But perhaps that‘s also a problem of availability?

DLP united through disapproving a committee of public health & safety being instituted at Hogwarts, and friendly goblins.

Not many like Chamber of Secrets??! It is tied with Deathly Hallows :( currently.

The atmosphere of tension and mystery in that book, with a peek into the history of Lord Voldemort(my favorite character) makes it an absorbing read.

The Mystery of the Heir ranks right up there with the Dream sequence of Bertha Jorkins tbh. I liked both and the reveal of Lockhart fraud was also pretty great when I first read it.

I'm too cynical to enjoy twists like that anymore because what was discovery in my youth is predictability in my old age.

Books one and two really weren't that great. I finished each of them and asked myself, "What is all the fuss about?" The story telling felt a little wooden as did the wordcrafting. The ending of book one was eye-rolling drudgery until the very end (Harry's strength on a broom, Ron's strength with chess, and Hermione's strength with logic games). Book two was a tad better, but Lockhart was a terrible character (Jar-Jar Binks level terrible).
Books three and four is where JKR hit her stride. The writing and storytelling in those books sailed. I chose book four over book three because it was the first glimpse of the world outside of Hogwarts and a few places in Britain.
The final books were good, but they were all darker (of course) and not as fun. On top of that (and I know, this is ironic with what I've written in WAVC), way too angsty for my taste—I'm thinking OotP in particular). After that, it seemed like she really didn't have a specific story to tell and instead, was just trying to bring the overall plot to a close.

    This survey was pretty fun.

Nice to see some Dumbledore appreciation.

There are at least five on the site with PhDs that I know of, including a mod.

I still use floppy disks (as coasters).

(I've nothing on a colleague, who stores atomic fireball candies in her office inside a W80 aeroshell. It puts Dumbledore's lemon sherbet tray to shame.)

A: or B: floppies? The first is funny, the second is retro chic (and probably not a half-dozen on this site that every used a B: floppy. Damn, I'm getting old).

Its a great starting point for Fanfiction, Voldemorts back, Harry is starting to seriously train, the world is getting some depth to it.

Best book is hard to judge, but i like GoF over all part in the meta story.

These surveys make me notice my advancing years. It can't be too long before we're more green wedge than orange in that first question.

I also thought we had a massive African demographic for a minute.
