    His family were a bunch of murderous, traitorous assholes who would have gotten themselves all killed off anyway in a coup that would have started a world war.

    This is one of the plot twists that I believe was very adequately explained by Kishimoto and was well done.

    Oh, and Itachi was also being blackmailed by Madara behind the scenes.
