As some of you know I am a bit of an opera fan and I have a soft spot for the comedic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. As I looked around online for a libretto of HMS Pinafore I stumbled across this thing, and I don't really know what to make of it. I can say, however, that I have laughed the entire way through. It is essentially the Sorcerer's Stone reformatted so that it fits into the form of the opera the HMS Pinafore, and it really is quite funny. Some of the stuff, naturally, stretches a bit. But I leave you with the initial potions lesson scene in the spoiled section so that you can get a fair idea. As a whole this was a refreshing change of pace. I give it a 5/5.

    HARRY
    Proud Snapey, I don't know't
    I'm just a young guy!
I have not learned by rote
    Your text on fungi!

    SNAPE
I will not take such guff
    From Harry Potter
    Too many harsh rebuffs
    Came from your father

    HARRY (aside)
    Cruel Snapey disappoints!
From me, he takes a point!

    He's really got his nerve
    I make him see red
    The Potions Prof observes
    With sheerest hatred.

    SNAPE
    He's really got his nerve
    He makes me see red
    I James' son observe
    With sheerest hatred!

    Explain, celebrity,
    The use of wormwood

    HARRY
    Proud Snapey, I don't know't
    I'm just a young guy!

    SNAPE/HARRY
He thinks he'll Potions brew/I could now bezoars brew
With just a wand flick/For I'm his scapegoat
Through him shall I renew/But he shall not subdue
Long-buried conflicts/Me with his Snape gloat

SNAPE Your assignment this week is to memorize your textbook, and then to translate it into Sanskrit. After that, our lessons will become difficult. Class dismissed.

Dead link is dead. Apparently the site moved to http://www.harrypotterfilks.com/ - though it's just a placeholder (yet?). If you know where to find another copy of the story, please inform the library staff.

I've never seen the full opera before, and I'm only familiar with the song A British Tar (from one of the Star Trek movies). I've been meaning to watch the whole production online at some point.

It was surprisingly entertaining regardless. The midi files provided gave the songs a lot more life then simply reading them. I actually sung along during A Quidditch Star. It was a fun read, and listen, overall.

No fucking way am I going to read it all, but from what I did read, its pretty fucking cool.

Well done to the guy who wrote it. Screw that amount of effort usually.

If someone actually performed this, it would be epic. However, I do not care to try to fit the words to the MIDIs provided.

    Wow.

I'm not a huge fan of HMS Pinafore, but I can appreciate the time and effort that went into doing this. I bet it would be hilarious in an actual performance.

    5/5 for the novelty

    That infernal nonsense, Pinafore?

Never seen it, though I have seen Pirates of Penzance, obviously.

Ah, and there are other HP musicals there as well! Be afraid, be very afraid.

The one I saw on youtube was actually pretty amusing.

The quote is hilarious. 'H.M.S. Pinafore' is one of the few operas by Gilbert and Sullivan I'm familiar with; plus it's easily the one I know most about. I'll be back with a rating.

Wow, this was great. The first song in the first act was the most catchy one and i found myself singing along quite happily.

    Easily 5/5!

Trust a fag to rec a musical. ;)

That said, what I read was actually very entertaining although I can't see myself going through all of it. It'd be cool to see it actually performed though.

    4/5
