I'm writing a fic and I need to know Harry's prices per hour when it comes to locating people. I was wondering if there was any point in the story that Harry mentioned his standard prices. Authors seem to avoid that so I doubt it but if you know any instance I'd appreciate it.

Would you say Harry charges as much as the average private eye, or less? In the earlier books we get the impression that he charges less but idunknow.

Harry charges $50/hour, no matter the assignment.

This, he tell Monica Sells that he charges $50/hour plus expenses in Chapter 4 of Storm Front.

Ah okay, thanks. I'll check Storm Front to see whether he asks for a down payment but surely his prices have gone up since then? Or am I just equating rise in power with rise in prices? Whatever. $50 and hour seems reasonable.

Just put them up at the rate of inflation. So maybe around $65-70/hour by the time Changes comes along.

He also has a retainer, if I recall. A minimum amount of hours/days he takes for a job. I think it's explained in one of the books, but I can't recall which.

That could just be for consulting with the police, though. I'm not sure.

He also works per diem on occasion, like when Murphy got busted down to sergeant and SI had to start saving the lunch money to pay him.

Its mentioned in the books, Death Masks maybe?, that Dresden charges a two day minimum on any case. 50 hourly is his stated rate, as well as any expenses, though Dresden does his best to keep those as reasonable as possible.

EDIT: Overtime was also mentioned in Blood Rites, though its unclear if that is a hike in his hourly charge or stress pay to compensate for the difficulty of the spells prepared and dealing with flaming monkey poo.

Doesn't he tell Marcone what he charges at some point early on also, in one of the first two books?

But yeah -- I'd say whatever he said to Monica Sells would be his standard rate.

That's probably to do with inflation, plus Arturo can afford it.

2 day minimum at 8 hours a day for $75/hour would be $1200 -- so a 1k cash advance makes perfect sense.

I find this thread oddly interesting.

Think it's possible he charges less for simpler things? I mean an active investigation into attempted murders and/or something dangerous might run a higher rate than, say, finding someones lost keys (important keys or not). It's also possible he charges the same amount no matter what the job is, and even has a 2day minimum on something that would take him 20 minutes to do.

Lots of wiggle room in there -- it's great. You have solid canon evidence for rates and room to maneuver. ^^

I suppose he charge $75/hour now, in the beginning of the books was $50 but that was over 10 years ago. Also I am sure if he see that the person cant afford it, but is a worthy cause he can make some pro-bono, also I assume if he have a to easy job he will not ask for a deposit and counting his work ethic he will not prolongue the case.

Did someone know what is the real rate price for a P.I:?

I assume it'd vary person by person and case by case. Its not like they have a union.
