I have no idea how the matchmaking system works. I am paired with people who, using the same hero, have absurdly stronger cards than me.
Dunno what's going on.

Edit: I'm assuming it's people who spent a bunch of IRL money on packs.

Yeah, you'll run into people with lots of cards on occasion, even in unranked.

How much have you played?

Mage, Paladin, Priest and Warrior have the best free & common cards imo, so I'd get them to level 10 first. Druid is pretty decent as well.

Use Shattered Sun Cleric in every deck you run, its one of the best cards in the game. Chillwind Yeti and Sen'jin Shieldmasta are good 4 drops. Frostwolf Warlord probably the best overall free 5 drop. Gurubashi Berserker is good with mage and priest - with mage you can use your fireblast hero spell to proc his +damage passive, and with priest you can heal/buff him cheaply so he's harder to kill.

Boulderfist Ogre is probably the only 6 drop worth using, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Stormwind Champion is very good - he can finish games for you if you have some level of board control.

Don't spend any gold while you do this btw, boosters aren't good value and arena is tricky before you get used to things.

 

What I'm really enjoying about this game is so far I'm having fun with every class.

I just threw together a warlock deck to play an unranked game against a priest. I was on the verge of being overrun when I buffed my Azure Drake with the +2 attack battlecry from a Dark Iron Dwarf, then popped a Shadowflame and one-shotted 5 opposing minions.

This game is damn fun.

I've been wanting to get into a card game like this for ages, but MtG has just seemed too much to start with.

 

Have like 45-50 victories on Play (mostly ranked) and thereabouts defeats.
My arena history consists of two 3-3s and two 1-3 stomps Poor gold, I hardly knew ye.

Now I'm starved for Gold because I only get a single Quest of 40g per day and getting 150 gold is a bitch, considering 10 gold take about ~6 games for me (3 wins in Play). So my arena options are pretty limited.


I'll keep your suggestions in mind when building.

Heh, I did MtG twice.

Once when it first came out and I was a kid. I played in a few tournaments at the local teen center and got destroyed by the actual teenagers.

The second time in my last year of undergrad, when me and a few friends each spent about $100 on cards to play one another. Then one of my friends decided that he couldn't stand to lose, so he spent an additional $300 to build custom decks. And proceeded to ruin it for the rest of us.

They're all pretty easy (except the 'collect every X' ones), and give 100 gold each. Probably you've already done a bunch of them anyway.

In Arena, the major breakpoints are 5 and 7 wins, getting to these amounts of wins give you 100+ gold and 150+ gold in the reward packets, which makes arena very good value to play.

Saving up like 600 / 750 gold so that you can buy into a bunch of arena consecutively is good, if you want to take a real stab at it.

It's not hard, at least for the first time.

You get 300 gold for getting 100 wins, 100 gold for all heroes to level 10 and another 100 for beating every AI-expert hero once.

But if you're gonna be like that, I can see I shouldn't even bother.

 

I saw the list. Yes, it can be done once. You spoke of it as being a regular possibility.


Maybe it is, if you're good at the game and go >7 in Arena, but I'm not there yet.

 

I get 2k gold saved up because I don't care about buying packs. Arena forever.

 

So, take a break from work, decide to draft a deck for an arena run when I'm done working.

Draft 4 Flamestrikes, Archmage Antonidas, and Ysera.

Does anybody have a release date for the open beta? I tried to get into the closed beta but never got a key And playing a few games on a friend's account only made me want it even more.

 

There's no official release date for it. We just now that it's gonna happen sometime next month.

 

4 flamestrikes is kinda overkill imo, but antonidas and ysera is fucking scary. Good luck.

My last mage draft featured a grand total of 2 damage spells. 1 each of fireball and pyro. Needless to say, it was not a good run....

 

The only thing I don't like about Arena is even though you are drafting it doesn't seem like you actually get the cards so unless you can go better than 6v wins it's a waste of time.

 

Sure, if you don't find Arena fun then it's better to just buy boosters and play only constructed.

To me, Arena is very fun (as long as I didn't get super screwed in the draft) so I play both Arena and Constructed a lot.

Not getting the 30 cards you draft is a non-problem imo, since you get a booster and gold / dust for 150 gold. Probably if you got all the cards you drafted, it would have to cost 750+ gold to enter.
