Hey, all. I'm currently planning out a Nartuo fic and I have a question that maybe someone here might be able to answer. How does Medical Ninjutsu work? Or, really, what is it actually used to heal? I've been reading the manga and watching the Anime and I'm trying to work out what it can and can't do since you see guys getting busted up and put in the hospital. Lee, for example, gets completely thrashed and spends some time hobbling around all bandaged up and using a crutch. So, can Medical Ninjutsu heal broken bones? Or is it mainly used for repairing internal injuries such as tissue/muscle/organ damage?

Also, while I'm here, I have an unrelated question. As I mentioned, I'm reading the manga and watching the Anime. I'm currently up to the Itachi/Sasuke/Kabuto fight in both the manga and the anime. It's mentioned earlier and then during this current fight that both Nagato and Karin are from the Uzumaki clan. So, wouldn't that make them and Naruto cousins or something? If his mom's clan is still kicking around, then wouldn't they have been notified of her death and Nartuo's existence? Shouldn't someone have come to claim guardianship over him?

I don't know enough about Naruto lore to speak about the medic nin part, but you're making a bunch of assumptions in regards to the notification of death and guardianship.

Even if we assume there is an Uzumaki clan wandering around out there somewhere, and that there exists the structure for them to be informed of Kushina's death, why on Earth would Konoha give Naruto to them?

Medical ninjutsu is sooooo 2008. Just carry some Hashirama cells around and you would be able to heal pretty much EVERYTHING.

Medical ninjutsu can heal pretty much anything in theory. The issue is that there are a few different kinds. There's the basics that all the medics we've seen can do, like heal cuts and bruises, etc. There's the hyper advanced techniques we see the greats like Tsunade and Chiyo use, some of which are more fuinjutsu than anything else.

Then there's Naruto's crazy bullshit after he inherits Asura's chakra. Not sure if that counts, though.

The gist of it is that most medical jutsu uses the patient's own chakra to heal their wounds. It's just that it needs a bit of help doing so, which is where the medic comes in. Think of it this way: Clans like the Uzumaki and Senju possess extreme vitality, because their chakra has a disproportional amount of yang energy in it. They can take hits that would kill another shinobi, let alone a regular human being, and recover from those same hits absurdly quick. Their chakra knows the deal.

Regular people have regular chakra, though, so a medic uses medic ninjutsu to guide their chakra. Some medics are better than this at others. Coincidentally, the woman with the best chakra control in the manga (aside from the demigods and such later on) also happens to be the best medic. Tsunade's pretty good at controlling her own chakra, which means she's also pretty good at controlling other people's chakra for them.

That's as far as canon takes it, so from there you can add in your own minutiae to flesh it out.

Notice that no one came to claim guardianship over Nagato or Karin either. Nagato was living with his parents in Rain before Konoha gave 'em the business and Karin was one of Orochimaru's experiments. When Uzushiogakure was destroyed the Uzumaki were scattered across the elemental nations, and most of them were flat wiped out. There was no one to notify of any strays, no place to send them.

Even if there had been, there is legit not the slightest chance that Konoha would give Naruto over to some bullshit distant relative. He's the Yondaime Hokage's son, his parents named Jiraiya of the Legendary Three his godfather, he's Konoha's one and only jinchuriki, and also fuck you.

    Hope that helps.

As far an medical ninjutsu goes, I was always given the impression that the medics stimulate cells regenerating, dividing and stuff... A medic would be able to reset the bone, but depending on the severity wouldn't be able to heal it completely. Do an admirable patch up job however, yes. Naruto after using the Rasenshuriken for the first time had his arm in a cast, and even with his healing ability and medical treatment it took time to heal. So I'd say it would still take time to heal regular breaks, or less time and a shit tonne of chakra.

As for Karin and Nagato, well. They were never stated to be named Uzumaki. It was observed by others that they must be Uzumaki due their chakra and hair, but never explicitly stated at least up until chapter 700 from memory. Nagato was an orphan, and Karin was a no name from Grass, who went with Orochimaru. It's pretty well supported by the manga that there is no Uzumaki clan anymore, just stray people who still have Uzumaki blood.

    Edit:
    Menace you glorious bastard...

Let me hook you up with some databook info:

    Medical Ninjutsu

The medical way that needs a talent different from ninjutsu. It’s a different type of skill from combat. The greatest control of the smallest amount of chakra, great professional knowledge, and the brains and dedication to use them. The biggest problem with medical jutsu are their particularities. Meticulous chakra control is needed and thus a natural aptitude is needed for users. These are why it takes a long time to develop and there aren’t many medical ninjas.

The greater the wound, the greater the ability needed. Also, its effects are not unlimited and reviving the dead is impossible.

    • Scratches and stab wounds: Difficulty 1
    • Broken bones, muscle and severed tendons: Difficulty 2
    • Great damage to the body: Difficulty 3
    • Regrowing damaged organ and death: impossibility
Even if Tsunade uses medical jutsu it is impossible to grow a whole organ (e.g. Dan’s destroyed kidneys). Incision healing using chakra scalpel can also be used for attacks!

Healing of external wounds using chakra: Procedure of putting chakra on the body and healing wounds.

Healing using owner seals: Using owner seals to control chakra levels and flow.

Tsunade’s Creation Rebirth: An ability that is not about healing but about regeneration. It can remake all organs and parts.

Mystical Palm Technique (Shousen no Jutsu)

    Ninjutsu, A-rank, Supplementary, Close range
    User: Yakushi Kabuto

The restorative medical technique that heals the body on the inside and the outside with the power of chakra.

An awe-inspiring medical technique where one sends chakra from the hand into a wounded area, causing that spot to restore itself by rapidly increasing its recovering ability. Since the chakra needs to be controlled in order to match the extent of the ailment, few are those who can use it, even among ninja medics. In addition, overloading an opponent with chakra to disrupt the normal functioning of their internal circulatory system, having them fall into a comatose state is also a possibility.
Effective on external wounds, of course, but on internal ailments as well.

    Body Pathway Derangement (Ranshinshou)

    Ninjutsu, A-rank, Supplementary, Close range
    User: Tsunade

Disturbing body control by severing the pathways of [brain←→body] information flow!!

An attack that severs the control threads with a flash of lightning!

By transforming the chakra within one’s body and giving it the properties of electricity, one creates an electric field. By pouring this into the nervous system of one’s opponent, one deranges their body control! An extremely high-level technique, used as a medical ninjutsu. The human body is controlled with electrical signals from the brain, but a person who had those electrical signals cut off with this technique will become unable to make their body move as they want. Because she’s an expert in medical treatments, Tsunade was able to master this technique.

One’s own body moves in any way, except how one wants it to move…!? For the common shinobi, battle, not to mention even just walking, will become impossible.

As soon as strike of the hand lands, electricity is poured into the enemy’s nervous system, severing the signals!!

Cellular Extraction Healing Jutsu/Medical Ninjutsu: What's Possible?

Healing Resuscitation Regeneration Technique (Chikatsu Saisei no Jutsu)

    Ninjutsu, A-rank, Supplementary, Close-range
    Users: Medical Team

In this formation, a burning restoring of life, a wondrous medical ninjutsu!!

With part of the casualty’s body as a medium, that part’s cell ratio is changed, and the lost part is regenerated. Due to the extreme difficulty and chakra control required for matching up the cell ratio, this requires a long period of time.

    1. Using a special intensive care unit, this act is laid out. For this medical treatment, teamwork between similar jutsu users is most vital.
    2. Through the collection of cells from the hair, it is used as a medium.
    3. The lost part is filled up with new cells.
    4. Minute attention to detail is necessary. This treatment’s success rate is not high…
Yin Healing Wound Destruction (In’yu Shoumetsu)

    Ninjutsu, A-rank, Supplementary
    User: Yakushi Kabuto

Restoration in anticipation of the attack, negating injuries!!

One anticipates the spot the enemy will attack and preemptively applies medical treatment to it, reducing damage to a minimum. Even more than accurately predicting the attack or instantly gauging the situation, a great resilience is necessary, so one might say this technique is exclusive to Kabuto.

He’s counterbalanced an attack in which the enemy had put all his might: is it only to coax them into forfeiting their fighting spirit already…?

His opponent’s facial expression and movements, the technique’s speed and power… He analyzes everything in an instant and accurately deduces where the attack will land.

    Creation Rebirth (Souzou Saisei)

    Ninjutsu, S-rank, Supplementary
    User: Tsunade

The absolute pinnacle of medical ninjutsu~~ a forbidden regeneration technique!

Created by the greatest of medical ninja, Tsunade, this is the ultimate regeneration technique!! By releasing a large amount of chakra at once, the body’s cell division is forcibly stimulated, reconstruction all organs and all tissues making up the human body!

If this technique is used, a body whose vital organs are so gravely injured that it cannot bear it any longer will be instantly restored to its uninjured state. It’s impossible to die by any means… for the sake of continuing to protect the lives of one’s comrades. That’s the resolution hidden in this technique.

By releasing the great volume of chakra stored in her forehead, Tsunade can make her body do the work of an untold number of years in an instant.
This wound may have brought her on the verge of death, but she won’t die~~

The acceleration of cell division that allows for the complete recovery from wounds is paid for with the shortening of one’s life span.

Tbh, I wouldn't mind reading a fic between chapter 699 and the epilogue where the medical community tries to get a handle on exactly what the fuck it is Naruto's doing.

"So you can regrow entire organs?"

    "Yeah."

"At the cost of the patient's lifespan?"

    "Nah."

"At the cost of your own lifespan?"

    "Lol."

    "What's the limit then?"

    "Eh."

"You couldn't regrow your own arm, right? Sasuke's either. So the limit is something like that, right?"

"You know Sasuke and I can just make arms out of chakra, yeah?"

    And then Tsunade retires.

Wow, thanks for that detailed info! And the clarification on the Uzumaki Clan. Very much appreciated. There's so much that goes on in the manga and the anime that it's easy to get confused.

It's perhaps misleading to use Lee as a guide post for general med nin capabilities since his chakra production is all messed up. What works for others may not work for him.

Also a bit of fanon I'd like to address: Hashirama was not a medical ninja! Nothing supports the idea that Hashirama was a medical ninja! Having a fast healing/regeneration factor does not make you a medical ninja!

In fact, I suspect that any attempts of his to heal people would have ended in disaster, especially since his chakra/cells likes turning people into trees.

Probably because his healing is described as a medical technique by Madara and repeatedly compared to Tsunade's feats as a medical ninja. Probably wouldn't call him a medic-nin myself but I get where the idea comes from.

However, comparing what would happen if Hashirama used medical jutsu on someone to what can happen when someone tranplants his cells into their bodies seems silly.

Lee suffers from a lack of talent, not a medical condition. Kid just sucks at using ninjutsu and genjutsu for most his life and has to work that much harder than most to learn them. Not really relevant to his injuries from Gaara.

Huh. Thanks. It must be fanon that his problem stems from defective chakra coils or something.

It is. In canon only thing said about it that Lee can't use nin/gen jutsu. No reason is given.

You mean the regeneration ability that is compared to Tsunade's regeneration ability? Also I haven't watched those raws in a while but I don't recall Madara ever referring to Hashirama's iryou-ninjutsu.

They literally live in a world where cells = chakra. People gain his chakra and its abilities from his cells, and subsequently turn into trees (or grow his face on parts of their anatomy). It's not particularly difficult logic to follow.

You'd think this bit should be obvious, seeing as he can use the Gates (which involve, I don't know, super-opening up various chakra pathways), never mind his canonical ability to tree/water walk

How does that mesh with him sucking at chakra control? I mean, we learned that tree walking and water walking are not the easiest techniques.

Wouldn't know about the raws, but I'm going by this.

There's a very big difference between Hashirama (or anyone, really) transforming his chakra into what's used for medical ninjutsu to heal someone and shoving bits and pieces of his body into someone else.

Moreover, Hashirama transferred his chakra to Sasuke so it's evidently not a big deal under such conditions.

Don't know if it's the same in other fandoms (e.g. Harry Potter), but the Naruto fandom is great at rewriting canon and then forgetting the difference. There are numerous other examples like Naruto's "special Henge" and getting chased around by angry mobs as a child. If you write a story in the Naruto fandom and post it on FFnet, there's always that guy who insists that these are canon facts and feels compelled to comment on it in a review of your story.
