    As the title implies.

My dumbfuck brain is going to go in expecting TNG, when we'll undoubtedly just get another Enterprise.

I'm hopeful. I haven't seen any information yet on when this Star Trek will be set, and to me that's what went wrong with ENT. They tried to set ENT prior to TOS, and it screwed with all sorts of things.

But I loved TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, and VOY. So provided they don't try to set this before TNG/DS9/VOY I think it's got a decent shot at being good.

I'm kinda hoping it will be set to coincide with the movieverse AU and that it will play off the destruction of Vulcan. That would open a whole realm of possibilities, as long as they leave a nice timegap.

Yeah, I imagine that it will be set in the New Universe.

The problem with the old universe is twofold:

    1) You can't tell stories set after the end of Voyager because the Federation just got their hands on a load of Borg-beating tech from the future.

    2) You can't tell prequels because Enterprise showed that people don't like them.

So New Universe it is. Obviously they can't afford an Enterprise-based TV show because the cast is full of very expensive actors, so I imagine it will be set on a ship which is a contemporary of Kirk's Enterprise. The pilot might even have a cameo from an actor from the movies.

I totally expected them to do a reboot of TNG. From the producers point of view it worked pretty well for the movies, it allows them to tell stories without worrying about them affecting the film series and it was arguably the most successful Star Trek series with a lot goodwill and nostalgia from the fans.

We may just as well start discussing who should play new Picard and Data.

EDIT: Read it somewhere else where it didn't mention that it's suppose to have new characters as it does in the link from OP. I still say they will have a time skip of few decades between the movies and the TV series though.

Could they go for a "founding of the Federation" type of story? Show the beginnings and whatnot. Wasn't that in the plans at one point, a show about the first human space ship?

I hope that this new series has nothing whatsoever to do with those thrice-damned new movies that weren't Star Trek in anything but name. Even if they were decent movies in their own rights.

    *erases half hour long rant*

The last time I got excited for a new Star Trek series, I got Enterprise. I'm currently finishing off a TNG re-watch, and about to start DS9 again (my personal favorite).

I'll check out a new series, but I'll be damned if I get my hopes up for anything watchable. :/

That was made, and that's the Enterprise show people are mentioning here (and don't like at all)

I wonder if maybe this is Michael Dorn's pitch getting greenlit.

There was really nothing wrong with the initial Enterprise concept. The execution however... Well, everything from characterization to plotting was just abysmal.

Exactly. When I heard the concept, and that Scott freakin' Bakula would be at the helm, I was stoked. What a colossal disappointment.

I actually love the Enterprise concept, but it was executed very badly. Depressing.

Also they spent so much time waffling about with vague timetravel nonsense that didn't go anywhere, a whole season on the Xindi, and one too many episodes in which characters just straight up start talking bullshit, even by Trek standards. (Supporting mass death in the name of evolution comes to mind.)

Instead, they could have done the birth of the Federation - and the Romulan War, and the first conflict with Klingons. Basically, awesome shit.

    They're good movies.

They just aren't Star Trek movies.

Really, this is all you need to know about Enterprise. We'll see what happens, but I somehow lack faith that anything will be good enough. Just look at what happened with Stargate Universe.

Well, I see Enterprise as the best sci-fi show I've ever watched, so I have doubts it's going to get better. I will watch it when it comes out, just in case.
