Hello everyone,

I want to build a new system, and I was wondering just what the differences between a sever processor and a desktop processor are. Would I see gaming performance decrease by using a Quad Server Core or a Quad Desktop Core?

I wanted to build a dual socket server core and have 8 physical cores.

Thoughts?

Indeed it is, I'm no expert but from my understanding while you'd be able to get some nice power as a gaming rig it would end up wasted as games aren't exactly made for that kind of setup.

Putting it together would be cool though, put it in a custom case and really have something to show off.

 

There's no real difference nowdays. I think the server chips have a few more instructions enabled but in reality like a Mac Pro Dual Socket machine you can install Windows and it will perform fine. The only real difference is the unbuffered RAM which won't really effect you.

It's just like the E8400 and Xeon equivilent and the Core i7 920 and the server equivilent.
