    Alright, so I discovered the closed thread by the same name and decided I'd post my 'grimoire' of spells from every story I've read, and several spells from BBC's Merlin. Sometimes I found multiple incantations for the same effect, so I decided to make the different incantations work for different strengths. For example, you will see Caeco, Caecare and Caecus for a blinding spell (I assume they have the same Latin root.) Respectively I have them listed as a jinx, hex and curse. Please, feel free to add to it, especially considering my limited number of Parsel spells.

    I'm conflicted.

    On one hand, list alike this one would be interesting. A google doc with all the fanon incantations and spells would be moderately useful even if for simple brainstorming.

    On the other hand, if the list is made of fanon sources, we'll have things like...

    And now, I feel like I'm opening a can of worms, but...

    Provided the existence of the magical world, it seems reasonable to believe that the incantations differ between countries, especially if the languages sound different, or have differing sounds (or sound groups that are a lot less common and hard to pronounce).

    A Chinese wizard incantation might as well be entirely different from the Latin standard of Hogwarts, but would the spell be any different? Would some version be a better one than the other equivalents? Could any spell be translated to another language, or would that be same as learning to cast it silently, and then, casting it silently each time while talking whatever nonsense you wish to say on top (basically, a fake incantation)?

    Bearing that in mind, I'd say that, gah, "parsel spells", whatever they are, seem probable, but there is nothing to indicate that they are better, nor that the probability is anything worth noting. Rather, I'd say that any that exist would be simple translations of the original spell, just for the sake of making the opponent confused - if anyone would hear, (or read your mind in case of silent spells), the incantation would make no sense and predicting your move would be night impossible. Then again, such a project seems to be a waste of time for a relatively short list of parselmouths.

    We've seen in sixth book that spells are created through some calculations. Incantation that Snape had come up with was "Sectumsempra," but we don't actually know output format of these calculations. They could just be numbers and Snape maybe just made substitution with latin letters. It could mean that incantation is just matter of standard in said country. I prefer this speculation, because person that wants to create a spell would have to create pronounceable word from numbers. It would be like solving some weird sort of puzzle.

    Alternative explanation could be that output of these calculations would be a fixed word, but if that's true, it could very well happen that output incantation wouldn't be pronounceable.

    Sorry for babbling. It's all speculation of course. I hope that it was helpful.

    Er, what in the sixth book makes you think spell creation has anything to do with calculations? There was absolutely no mention of arithmancy or numbers in the HBP's book. Further, the process by which Snape created the Levicorpus spell is clearly presented as linguistic, not numerical, in nature: he discovers the correct incantation by trial and error with other incantations.

    And what's wrong with fan-made spells? Yes, a number of the spells in my list are fan-made, but a number of them are also canon in their source material.

    I was referring to Sectumsempra spell. I vaguely remember some mention of charts, many mistakes, etc. I think that calculations were there too. I just tried to check with canon, but I can't find it. I also don't have english verson of the book. My apologies if I screw something up again.

    Arithmancy, as I understand it, is way of predicting future with using numbers. It has nothing to do with creating of spells. Nothing in canon suggests that it has. Again, correct me if I am wrong.

    Sectumsempra was merely written on the corner of a page with the note "For Enemies". That's all there was. There was no evidence in the book that Snape had even created the spell rather than discover it. We only discovered that later when Snape laid claim to the spell at the end of the book.

    Yes, arithmancy is about determining the likely outcome of events/interactions and has nothing to do with spell creation as far as we know. Which is why I am confused about your mention of calculations. Arithmancy is the only magical discipline we know of that involves numbers.

    I remember mentioning of calculations somewhere in sixth book in relation with creating of spells. I am quite certain that it was in Snape's potions book. I assumed that it was canon, so I expanded on that. It is also possible that translator from English to Czech screw it up. Another possibility is that my memory is playing tricks on me. It wouldn't be a first time it happened.

    If we go with the notion that aritmancy is a form of divination as its etymology suggests you can still have it be used in conjunct with the way Taure's describe spell creation from HBP. We know that wrong incantations can have disastrous consequences so trial and error could be a bit life threatening, here enters aritmancy.

    Assuming its a reliable way of prediction (the presence of some math and Hermione's lack of disdain could indicate that) it can be used to ascertain that one particular word won't turn the wannabe spell creator into a pile of ashes.

    Well, there's a reason it's fanon: it makes sense. Arithmancy as we understand it would technically fall under the class of Divination as that is what it is. Who needs a class that does nothing but tell you how to predict the future using numbers, especially when you have a class that covers many of the methods for divination? BUT a class that teaches you at least one way to create spells? Now THAT'S useful. I'm not sure HOW it would work for five years, but at least it makes sense.

    Arithmancy is what Harry Seldon from The Foundation series used.

    I'm sure you can make do with similar subjects. After all, both trasfiguration and charms are about spells, but they are different enough.

    I think I would prefer spell creation to be a very mysterious process, not something that could be easily taught or explained. Perhaps it would be akin to artistic creativity. Artistic techniques can be taught--how to play an instrument, how to sight-read, the fundamentals of counterpoint and harmony--but not creativity itself. Analogously, wizards are provided all the tools they need to create spells at Hogwarts--Charms and Transfiguration--but a creative spark is required for the invention of something worthwhile.

    Yup, me too. I felt like it was something akin to mathematical statistics with magic as the key factor.

    It would be cool if someone wrote a fic about a Harry who excels in Arithmancy and uses it to fuck with the WW's economics. Averis could do it; he can pull a douchey Harry very well.
