Re-implementing document uploads in the new PatronusCharm, what does everyone use for authoring new chapters? I used to use Word, but I imagine the world has moved on to Google Drive, but lets see.

I can't imagine writing in anything but Word. I know there are probably better options out there but I have no desire to find out. Admittedly, this may be one of those things I'll rant about when I'm 90 and my grandchildren come visit.

    Hm, it depends.

If I'm writing something that's either short (<2.5k words) or a single scene (however long), then I write in Word.

If I'm writing something with more than one scene, I write in yWriter. After I'm done with the drafts I'll export to Word for a final draft and clean-up.

Then I usually copy/paste into Google Docs to get alpha-feedback ("comment" feature FTFW) before posting to DLP WbA.

I use Wordpad .rtf files. I'd just as soon leave the spelling and grammar interference out of the way when I'm just trying to write, then open the file in Word or OpenOffice (or even in a browser) and see what shakes loose in the edit phase. Also- very quick to load.

Recently discovered a downside- Android doesn't come with an .rtf reader/editor.

And I can't imagine using anything Google if I'm not force-feed it (aka, the search). Google == do not want. That's how far we've come.

Perhaps you would be better off asking for formats, Raven. I'm using the 2000 suite of MS Office (buying a new writing software is the most useless thing ever), so either .doc or, for transfer purposes, .rtf.

Edit: And even aside from Google, I wouldn't dream to store my files online. Not in this world. Not if I got paid for it. Especially not exclusively. I like them neat and tidy on my desktop, back-up'd on an external drive, and perhaps as a third back-up at a webhoster I know personally and have direct access to.

I used to favor Wordpad .rtf files when I was starting out, but these days I small-change everything in ~500 word packets in the 500 Club most of the time and only compile it all from the segments in the topic itself later on. Rare is the time when I write >1000 words at a time anymore.

Occasionally I'll write in Drive if I want instant-backup guaranteed, but it goes so slowly especially when backspacing to edit an error that I avoid it most of the time.

I will write in whatever is easiest to open at the time. Right now I have Microsoft OneNote open (which is fantastic for my purposes) with around 100,000 words for over twenty stories. I also have a set of Sticky Notes up with snippets and ideas - usually nothing serious, but it's another program that automatically saves and recovers from unexpected shutdowns and doesn't require the internet. I have also used Drive, Word, OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and even private journals/blogs or writing emails to myself and saving in my drafts.

I use Word. I've never had a complaint, and I'm not one to use something new just because it's new. It does everything I need it to do.

I don't write as much as many in here, but I do write enough to have a schedule and routine.

Since my work requires me to go to many places during the week, while my computer remains at home, what I do is that I write the first bit in word, and upload it ffn.net. There I can log in from whenever I have some free time and write a little. I assume there are many sites that offer similar and/or better services, but I've had no problems so far, since I usually proofread myself.

All my little notes and half-baked ideas and proto-fics are in Word.

Short stories are in Word for Mac.

Longer stuff is written in Scrivener (which exports to docx). Scrivener is awesome.

I like Word, though sometimes I like uploading blank chapters to the FF site and just using the Document Manager thing. Only thing is it's not very versatile.

Everything I write is handwritten, then copied into Word (manuscript format) for finesse, then copied into Google Drive for collaborative editing. Sometimes I print out the Word doc in 'novel' format, complete with giant first letters and Times New Roman font, for hardcopy revision on trains and planes, as it can be nice to see something the way a reader does.

Once in a while, I write start to finish in Google Drive, depending on how dedicated my BETA/editor is. On-the-spot editing is genuinely remarkable.
