Don't get me wrong, I like them and all, and I enjoy reading them. However, most of the time it ends up with Naruto and Harry (sometimes sasuke) ending up as brothers, or Harry's related to someone in Konoha or something. Thank god we have some originality, like Red Dragon's Order's fic, 'Over the Hills and Far Away.'

Know what I hate about them?

They're usually slash to the nth degree.

Or they completely gimpify Harry and/or Naruto.

Or they don't have the FUCKING TITLE CHARACTERS from either of the series included in the story at all.

    Or they're written like shit.

As you can see, I have a lot of reasons why I don't read them.

It's a manga/anime about a hyperactive thirteen year old ninja.

Y'know what I hate about Naruto crossovers?

The fact that it is a Naruto crossover.

Naruto sucks...and when you write a crossover that has equal amount of both fandoms, you have to be stupid not to realize that at least half your readers are going to be befuddled about what the hell you're on about.

Harry Potter and fucking 'chakras' don't mix. Magic exists in the HP Fandom...why not use that instead of flouncing about like a ninny and yelling "ZOMG, teh powahs teh Dark Lawd noes knot is CHAKRASSSS!!!!!11!!1!!!oneoneone!!!eleven!"

Being imaginative isn't that hard, really.

I agree that Magic and chakra does not mix, however this is not my main beef with this type of crossover. What is, is that the majority of people that try this suck, so the fic sucks and more people get turned away from the awsome series of Naruto/Harry Potter.

Y'ever read For Your Dream by The Itch? It's a decent crossover in the beginning, but there are glaring plotholes by the time you read all the way through it. Like how Harry got from Privet Drive, Surrey to the Village hidden in the Mist (don't remember the exact name atm).

I don't usually like HP/Naruto crossovers but there is one that holds my fancy: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2585729/1/.

The problem with both verses is that there are many similarities between Harry and Naruto which leads to irritating fangirls combining both worlds in a horrid and cliche-ridden mess.

I was thinking that Orochimaru and Voldemort are the most similar characters from the two series: Both have a fetish for snakes, a fetish for torture, have an obsession with pale underage white boys with dark hair, have an obsession with living forever, have an obsession with being the strongest shinobi/wizard, etc. etc.

You have a good point although I don't see Voldemort swallowing his wand and regurgitating it in the heat of battle. But the point I was trying to make was that Harry as well as Naruto have characteristics that draws us, as readers/viewers, to them and makes us imerse ourselves into the storyline. It's a cheap yet effective trick.

Same goes for the villain as you pointed out. Basically if you strip down both verses to their essential they would be the same. Only Harry uses magic in a 'normal' world and Naruto uses chakra in a ninja world, so it should (theoretically) be possible to combine both worlds in a succesful crossover. Still, it would be mighty difficult to combine the upbeat anime with the gritty world Rowling tries to create (though I have to give her credit for thinking it up in the first place).

Unfortunately rabid fangirls do not have enough writing skills to succesfully combine both worlds leaving us with bad fics. And a foul taste in my mouth after attempting to read such a fic. So I usually steer clear of these attempts, though if anyone knows a good crossover please PM me.

Totally off-topic. In most fairy-tales it's always the stepmother who's the evil witch and not to be trusted. This always makes me wonder where exactly the biological mother went. For all we know Snowwhite's father abonded her mother in a fit of mid-life crisis.

I've never even seen Naruto, but I've read some summaries and as such and have a few questions about it.

    1) What the fuck is a Kyobi or a Kyunbi or something like that? Sounds like an Asian Pornstar's name............

    2) Chakras? Is this related to Pringles? Cause if it is, I'll have mine in salt and vinegar

Kyuubi is the extremely powerful Demon Fox that's sealed inside Naruto. The demon attacked Naruto's village, and it was finally killed when the fourth hokage gave his life to seal it inside Naruto, who was a baby at the time. Unfortunately all the villagers hate the fact that he's got this really evil demon inside him, so they treat him like crap (think somewhere between the Dursleys pre-hogwarts and when the whole school thought Harry was the heir of Slytherin). Now Naruto can tap into the Kyuubi's chakra, making him stupidly powerful, and in times of great stress he goes feral and gets significantly faster and deadlier. In a lot of fanfics Naruto and the Kyuubi have a much closer relationship than in canon, with the two often 'talking' to each other in Naruto's head, though whether they're enemies or friends (or even, on occasion, lovers *shudder*) depends on the author.

Nope, there's no connection between chakras and pringles. Sorry. In the Narutoverse chakra is the energy manipulated by ninja (and others) to pull off all the superhuman tricks they get up to. It's released from a persons tenketsu (chakra pores) and shaped by the hand seals they use into anything from breathing a fireball to creating a temporary duplicate of themselves. Every ninja has a different amount of chakra, as well as a different amount of skill at wielding it. Because Naruto has the Kyuubi sealed inside him he can make use of it's chakra, so he has effectively 2 chakra sources; his own (which is normal 'blue' chakra) and the Kyuubi (which is red chakra, and in fanon frequently behaves in a different manner [IE more powerful] owing to it being demonic) This gives Naruto the ability to use much more powerful techniques than he has any right to, as well as heal virtually any injury overnight. All that being said, I find the idea of replacing chakra in the Narutoverse with pringles to be intriguing. Presumably to pull off attacks you'd have to eat them or something.

As to what this topic was about originally, there are 2 things that piss me off. One is when they try and combine magic with chakra in some way (either the ninja are all doing wandless magic or the wizards are all using their chakra to cast spells). The two systems were never meant to go together and are completely different, so when someone tries to put them together they always fail and it always looks bad.
The other thing is when they let one universe unbalance the other. Either having Harry with his magic completely pwning all the ninja he comes across or, more frequently, having Naruto capable of slapping down any wizard with his mad ninja skillz. If you're going to do a crossover then it has to be done in such a way that the two universes balance, otherwise it just feels like a mary sue insertion.

I had a little plot bunny concerning the differences between magic and chakra. Y'know how Lee's chakra coils are all screwy, so he can't use nin or genjutsu? What if he could use a wand?

The way I figured it was, Chakra and Magic are two ways of focusing magic, but can't be used simultaneously (Meaning you can't have Harry being able to do both ninjutsu and magic). We never got much details on squibs, and it is merely said that they can't do magic. Perhaps they could to ninjutsu? Instead of using wands, they have the chakra coils to focus the magic/chakra, thus the difference between the two. So, if Harry were born a squib, he could learn ninjutsu.

So, good idea, or retarded idea?

I wouldn't go outright calling it retarded, since you've demonstrated rational thought behind the concept, but I don't think it's a good idea, no. I can't see any attempt to tie chakra/inner coils into Potterverse magic ever coming off well because the systems are just completely different.

From what I've seen in the anime (I've not read much of the manga) regarding the inner coils and chakra, everybody has them, which is why the gentle fist is so deadly; even in non-ninja it causes serious injuries by messing up their chakra pathways. What makes ninja different is that they've spent years developing the ability to tap into and control their chakra; that's what most of their training at the academy is spent doing. Remember that they start at the academy at about 4 or 5, and they don't leave 'til they're 11, by which point they know all of about 3 jutsus (bunshin, kawarimi and whatever the transformation one is) plus anything their family's taught them. The intervening time can't just have been spent throwing shuriken at stuff, so I figure it's then that the learn the chakra control for ninjutsu. Without those years training nobody can hope to use their chakra for anything.

Personally, I find it rather annoying whenever they throw a character from one fandom into the other only for the character to realize: 1) they have a family there and/or 2) they can do these awesome and complicated things that no one else can with little to no training. Kinda like throwing Harry into the ninja world and they speak the same language and Harry has an ultra super-rare bloodline that will cure world hunger.

Don't get me wrong I love almost any kink of crossover even when I don't know the other fandom, it lets me broaden my metephorical horizon. Kinda like testing the waters I suppose. Unfortunately, there are so many bad authors out there that it is hard to find a crossover that actually makes you want to read more of the new fandom.

I was, I'm sad to say, one of those crossover writers. I posted the first chapter and then looked at my story and went: This is nonsense! I can't seem to bring myself to take it down that first chapter though.
