I was trying to look up some info on HP Lexicon a little bit ago and found that no images would load on the home page and following links would just send me to a search site. Have you guys heard anything about the site going down or being hacked?

If you take all of the links that end it .info and change it to .org, it still works.

My (techie) guess is that the info domain is going away. I doubt he'll suddenly just take everything down like that. Even JKR uses the site!!!11

Also, the images were more than likely hosted on the .info site, and linked using the full path instead of a relative path. Thus, info site goes down : images fail.

It seems the former owner Steve Ark sold the domain.

hp-lexicon.org is owned by Melissa Anelli (The Leaky Cauldron)
    hp-lexicon.info is owned by a domain-dealer in London (sedoparking.com)

    EDIT:

Nope. Doesn't work. All I tested returned a 404 Error.

It worked the last time I tried it, just as I was posting...>.> Sure the images were fucked, but the information still worked.

Your provider? Do you use a cache?

    Militis: Click this: http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/wizards_list.html
and once it's loaded press F5 twice.

Is there supposed to be anything there? I'm getting 404s no matter how many times I click F5.

That was directed at Militis, just to prove the lexicon is gone.
But as the domain hp-lexicon.org now is part of The Leaky Cauldron, I expect it will return soon.

How much was it sold for?

"Sold the domain" was a metaphorical phrase.

A whois search revealed he doesn't own the domains anymore. So I assume it was "sold" or in other ways "handed over".

... eh. I noticed that as well; was using the google-cache for the last (five?) days to get my info.

Now, I don't have a particular opinion about that Vanderark guy and his fight with Rowling, but he knew how to make a lexicon. If Anelli fucks it all up (starting with removing or adding things because Rowling says so) I'll be very, very displeased.

Just use the Wayback Machine until it's back up (or if the Leaky Cauldron fucks it up). I bet it captured most, if not all of the lexicon.

Indeed. The court case is still going on, is it not? Might have been temporarily closed.

Or, they might be getting a new URL for the book. (If it's ever released)

I hope we can make all this info available to DLPers and PC authors, if the Lexicon gets totally removed or if Leaky or someone else fucks it up.

No matter what else what we might think, this was a pretty good resource for all lazy fanfic writers.

Perhaps if it is permanently removed, we can make a DLP one; with the Ginny page showing a 404 Error.

Didn't that court case against it have the entire Lexicon in text format entered as evidence? Just download that and you're good to go.

    Two secs...

Found it, from Taure's post back when this was today's news.

They even provide pdf-files. Wow. That's probably the best way to hinder someone to publish the lexicon - it's legally available for free.

But the links above aren't complete, some articles are missing. So for a complete lexicon, you need (all?) other attachments, too.

EDIT: Danjam, I think you missed my point. It's a court case dealing with copyright infringement. And what happens? The whole thing is published online as e-book for free, before the case is even closed.

... It was before too, considering it was a website and all.

I'm guessing something happened in the trial between JKR and the guy who owned the site? I didn't think she'd go so far as to force him to remove the site though... that's just faggish.

JKR does have a propensity for that, does she not?

Y'see, being faggish doesn't bother her. It certainly didn't stop her from ruining Dumbledore...

Anyway, I hope that this'll be up again soon. I might have started a HP story soon, and searching though the books is not something I'd like to do...
