    This thread popping up reminded my that Jay Exci did a 5 hour YouTube video breaking down the issues with Chibnall era Doctor Who. [MEDIA] Yeah that's not a typo it's really 5 hours long. It's pretty good though, not an endless rant but more a video essay broken into different themes/topics and packaged all together instead of strung out into a 10 part series or whatever. Worth sticking on in the background.

    Felt like Blackadder dropped into my granny-drowning episode. Almost got whiplash from the tonal change. It was not terrible or anything, I liked the concept of the mud-corpses, they are really trying to stay away from scaring the kiddies, so many ways they could have a made those hide-behind-the-sofa scary.     Not to mention poor Kira, who after an episode of connecting with the gang and being tragically adorable, gets murdered by the good guy machine. Does the Doctor care? Like hell does she care, apparently the poor AI was just trying to show George what pain felt like by murdering innocent people (rather than just offing the dude actually doing this since apparently it can do that.) She doesn't even miss a beat before chalking up Kiara as a nessisary sacrifice.

    So this episode was okay. They visited another countries history which is pretty rare, so that's nice. They also went straight for Britain's colonial past which DW usually steps around like its a dead rat. My major gripe that they managed to sideline Yaz in her own family story. The beats were dramatic and the storyline itself was pretty solid, unfortunately the wider cast was stilted as hell and the drama felt pretty flat to me.     I like the cinematography of the new episodes and in general the effects and the sets feel like they have stepped up a bit in quality. This story wasn't an instant classic or anything but it was enjoyable. Still not completely sold on this Doctor but I'm getting there. I'm just not getting the whole 1000+ year old timelord aspect.     Have to say I was hoping for something better. Nothing much felt that fresh. The monster of the week looked dumb, (then again it terrified my neice) and sounded cliché.     It has its stand out moments, the first doctor was brilliant realised though I'd wish there was more plot to interspace the old doctor disapproves of new developments gags. The ending was of course emotional though it was easy to guess where they were going from the setup. The whole thing time-warped it's way up it's own arse, I can't imagine getting anything out of it on its own terms. His final soliloquy just went on and on and on.     [MEDIA] New clip for the Christmas special dropped, a bit of 1st Doctor meeting 13. Looks like it will be fun to have those two bouncing off each other no matter what the storyline ends up being. I'm sure they will pull out all the stops for Moffet and Capauldi's last episode.

    I'm sorry but WTF is with the length of those trousers? I've got no problem with the rainbow stripe theme or the suspenders but those high waisted culottes are a god-awful crime against fashion. Hope they look better on screen. Not sure on the coat but can wait to see it a little better. Then again the Doctor has been a guy for the last few thousand years, perhaps its supposed to look a bit weird, Like he/she is not to sure how he is supposed to fit an outfit around these new...lumpy bits.

    I'm liking Bill more and more. She's fun and she is clearly a great actor. I never minded Clara much but this dynamic is a much better fit. The plot was a bit boilerplate again, but it was solidly done and enjoyable to watch. I am really looking forward to whichever episode manages to give us a great memorable storyline to go with the great chemistry. Think Missy and Simm's Master are supposed to come back (one is probably behind that door.) That should be fun at least.

    Episode 2 was good, if the storyline was a bit boilerplate. If they just spend is final season doing decent singular episodes with the mystery vault being the overarching plot I'd be fairly happy. Not every season has to top the scope of the season before.

    They played Clara's theme at that part when she says imagine if someone did it to you. Think they were trying to reference when Clara wiped the Doctors memories off her before she spread herself around the universe.     They pulled off a female Master well enough. A good actress could easily be the Doctor, the things that make the Doctor the Doctor are not gender specific. You could do a lot of interesting things with old dynamics if you flipped the genders of the typical cast (Older guy young female companion.) It would be kind of a shame of the made him/her a young pretty looking girl though, (even if it would have the best marketing potential) when there are a lot of good older female actresses out there...

    I liked it, the trailer made it look stupid as hell but in reality, it was surprisingly heartfelt. A good sprinkling of cheese on top but then, it is Christmas. I also call bullshit on the Doctor, when presented with the same situation/stimuli however many billion times, would come up with the exact same conclusions/solutions every time. Hell the events aren't even so tightly controlled that the exact same stimuli would be present each time.     Interesting you should say that. I remember an interview Russell T Davis did years back, apparently originally the Doctor was going to hand Rose a piece of Tardis coral at badwolf bay. The idea was that Rose and meta-crisis 10 could eventually grow a Tardis and go adventuring in the new universe, but it was cut for time/impact.

    Well they are definitely setting the groundwork for a female doctor. I thought this episode was very very good. To the point that it elevated the whole season. But then I like [redacted] and thought their send off was a nice twist on what has happened to others in the same position like [redacted]. [SPOILER] So yeah, had its issues but a satisfying ending.

    Eh the ending provided a decent pay off for the framing device they were using. It worked well enough even though, as you said it ment it wasn't all resolved by the Doctor. Though I think that the fact it wasn't all resolved was supposed to be the dun dun duuuuh! Moment.

    That is true. I mean they are still as stupid as hell and about as 'cool' as your dad buying skinny jeans and all. But the screwdriver was a bit of a point-and-fix plot device unless the plot decided it couldn't that week 'Oh dear! Its made of wood and its deadlocked sealed!.' Making it more of a scanner type item might mean they have to come up with better solutions than just sonic it. I still hate them though.

Even if its not explicitly spelled out (and it often is) there's often something to tip you off to a plot twist/point/whatever in the discussion.     Eh continuity is just one of those things you have to sacrafice to enjoy Doctor Who. The only true constant is 'the Tardis is a blue box' absolutely everything else is up to reinvention whenever the writers of the day feel like it.     I reckon this season will end with Gallifrey coming back. 10 years without it is a nice even number, Capaldi has settled in and it will shake things up again. Plus I think Moffet will want to want to play that out his way, rather than leave it to the next guy.

    Oh I'd be very surprised if Danny didn't come back, if so that would be an unusually brutal end for a reoccurring character. I like Clara, I think her faults are not played down, which fits with the theme of this season. She's allowed to be inconsistent, or ruthless, or sanctimonious, every time I get annoyed at something she does I sort of go 'yeah but honestly you've acted like that at some point.' Shes also really good at keeping her cool, which is pretty rare in a young female...

    Clara never actually saw Danny's body at the accident, or apparently afterwards as far as we know, his death is not part of her personal timeline, only the assumption that he's dead. If the Doctor can work around the cyberman thing there is definitely room to go pull him out or fuck with the timeline before he dies.     I really liked it, would put it up there with one of my favorites, utterly illogical of course but Doctor Who jumped the shark on that before I was even born. I found the absurdity of the central idea was easy to swallow around the good acting, a well constructed atmosphere, and some nice themes, and no the debate to kill a unique moon sized lifeform that just spent hundreds of millions of years growing dosent have to be an abortion metaphor, we really don't have much of a pro-life movement...

    I feel like this episode was somewhat let down by the way it was directed and cut, but tbh as much as Gatniss's nods to old Who and such were nice it was pretty overshadowed by the lack of a good plot. I can't quite tell if Gatniss wrote a funny little script with clever thematic threads woven through it and it was produced poorly, or it was just that hammy from the beginning. Admittedly I did hear that Gatniss wrote the script without being given much of an idea of what the new Doctor was...

    The plot was the worst of it, but I liked Capaldi, and I liked Clara's reaction to him, it was a good mix of off balance and upset, which seems about right, she may have seen the previous incarnations (however much of that she remembers) but loosing 11 for 12 has gotta be a tough adjustment. I sort of liked how they handled the change in the relationship, the ideas were there but it felt really awkwardly done.
