    There was a short story or plot bunny I once read, where Harry & co. used the Taboo to bring in and ambush snatchers. Later, when they were on a rescue mission at Malfoy Manor, they used it again to bring down the wards preventing their escape. Don't remember the name of the story, though. :sherlock:

    The "Willingness to die to save the world" bit, iirc, doesn't protects Harry himself, but bestows a protection onto the other combatants on Harry's side - much like Lily's on Harry 16 years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Even in first year - remember how most of Harry's own housemates turned on him because of the dragon incident? It would've put quite a damper on his desire to make more new friends, after experience things like that.

    Not necessarily. Defence probably require students to think on their feet and act under pressure - well, more pressure than merely exams, anyway. E.g. While for Charms they may ask students to perform a specific spell, in Defence the proctors may throw a Grindlylow at a student and see how he/she fights it off, what kind of spells is used, etc.

    Hermione could have not done as well as Harry in the practical. I think that would be the Occam's Razor answer. As for the McGonagall/O in Defence comment, I think you misinterpreted that. She was stating that NEWT Potions was essential study for Aurors, and that Snape demanded an O to admit students into his NEWT Potions class. It didn't say what the student had to score, just that you have to have a NEWT/OWL for it and we know that O, EE and A are all passing grades. You can still be an...

    The Defence OWL has a practical portion and she might not have done well on it? Blasphemous, traitorous idea, I know. Also, you're assuming that just because Snape only took O students in his NEWT Potions class, that he would only take O students in his NEWT Defence class. And thirdly, there were other students in the NEWT Defence class, too, right? So it is possible that other students got an O as well, we just never knew their scores.     Is Umbridge's being horri-bad at magic a fanon invention? I've been thinking about this lately (whether she could've been a competent teacher if she put her mind into the DADA job). Problem is, we've only ever seen a few pieces of magic from her. Thoughts?

    ...or Malfoy really sucks balls. There was one theory that Harry deliberately becomes an Auror but without the Elder Wand, so that if he "loses" somehow, somewhere, the mastery of the first Hallow will become lost - and with the wand itself safely locked away (in Dumbledore's tomb or elsewhere) the power of the Elder Wand will be negated, since the 'owner' will probably never get his hands on it.
