On the topic of war vs. China. Again, read the fucking thread. No one, except those who are misreading the thread, is suggesting a full scale Britain vs. China war.

With regards to the hypothetical USA vs. China war, I've already addressed your points in the thread (you are capable of reading, aren't you?). Vietnam and Afghanistan are bad examples to try to show the USA to be weak. Those wars were/are against civilian populations using guerilla tactics. War with China would be against a standing army. Note that the US completely eradicated Iraq's standing army in record time. Fighting against standing armies is what the US is best at.

Vietnam would only be a suitable case study for the discussion if someone suggested the USA try to hold the Chinese mainland against the civilian population, after defeating the standing army.

    Yeah... no.

Your position is clearly untenable. If you claim,as you do, that no one "opinion" (where in this case opinion = domestic policy) is more right than another, you'd be forced to accept that the Nazis had the right to do what they liked, because their opinion is "just as valid as the West's".

Unless you're willing to say that the Nazis *were* justified, you have to accept that your position of complete relativism with regards to values cannot hold (since it entails the Nazi's being justified).

Moreover, even if you still want to hold onto relativism, it doesn't mean you have to advocate "every nation can do what they want." Sure, it's fairly evident that values are relative. However, it's also true that as individuals/nations, we are not relative. We are where we are, we hold the values that we do, and the fact that someone else somewhere else has a different value to us doesn't change that.

By the by, posted this here because the point has been made at least 5 times in the thread, so there was little point posting it in there. Perhaps, in future, you should read a thread before posting in it.

Whether or not China had the right to do whatever it liked is the whole topic which is in dispute, so to claim that "China had the right to do what it likes because it has the right to do what it likes" is at best circular.

Further, I have shown in the thread that we don't hold that states can do whatever they like within their own borders. Every single case of international intervention (most extreme example: Nazi Germany) is a case of us deciding that a nation has done something out of line.

Therefore, if we do not hold in principle that a state has the right to enforce whatever laws and sentencing it likes within its own borders, we cannot use this principle to justify China's execution of this man.

Rather, it has to be justified on a case by case basis. In this case the man did not have a fair trial, was tried in a judicial system not in accordance with international law, and was subjected to a punishment that the UK government considers cruel and unusual.
