I have no clue what the rules are, but personally speaking as a reader person, I'd like it if entries were self-contained. I mean, you can expand on it later sure, but it should stand on its own beginning, middle and end, please. I'd rate and review it for what it is, not what it could be.

You could pull a Joe and have something like Temptation of the Averis

Have my idea, first time I'm going to try writing anything horror related so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

You need to submit something that can stand on its own. That doesn't mean it has to be the whole story.

Look at Joe's winning entry from the December Competition. I think a few people commented at the time that it was more a prologue to a story than the story itself, but it won and I think it was fantastic.

Patrick Rothfuss submitted a single chapter of The Name of the Wind as a standalone short story to a competition and I think he won? His chapter just happened to be able to stand on its own with a beginning and an end.

So the answer is 'it depends.' Certainly you can do this, but for it to be a viable entry it would need to be able to stand by itself. Which is more than doable, but will require you to keep it in mind.

I'm pretty much done with mine. Just gotta write the final scene and then do some editing.

There's no minimum word count ;)

I'm looking forward to reading the best five-word fanfiction you have ever written.

I've yet to find a good ending, and I also look forward to translating everything I've written into English ... that'll be fun.

But yeah, pretty optimistic that I'm going to make the deadline as well.

I finished my story today. It actually came in around a decent length. I just need to edit it, and hope I'm not the only one competing. Though, I daresay it will be really obvious which story is mine regardless.

You won't be the only one submitting, Anarchy. :)

I've been gone from the fandom and DLP for quite a while, but I think I'll submit something just for fun.

Just started a new concept that I'm digging more than my original one(sorry Sorrows, but thanks for your motivation a little while back). Might be shit but whatever, I like it, now whether or not I can write it is another question.

EDIT: What's ten days to knock out a proper short-story eh? Let's start partially fresh again!

I think, in that regard, you're pretty safe. I still suspect a record-breaking number of entries.

I'm optimistic that I'll finish my tiny tale this week, and even though it's definitely not up to the standard of DLP's best authors, I'm pretty curious as to what the reactions will be like.

Just a quick question @Ched (not sure whether this has been asked before): Even though contestants shouldn't be allowed to vote for obvious reasons, are they able to review stories other than their own?

I did in the first round, but it pretty much outted my story since it was the only one I didn't review. I'd say wait until the end of voting if you wish to remain anonymous.

Second round, everyone went through after the fact and reviewed, or rather, a couple authors did. So it really just depends. Sounds like a decent idea to wait, tbh.

Turned mine in a couple of days ago. It could inevitably use another round of editing and a lot of polishing, but it is what it is.

Same as Anarchy. Then again, I think everything could always use one more round of editing and polishing!
