So.. I was wondering in the infinite channels that is youtube, do any of you have some you would recommend in general?

Personally, I find it difficult to discover new channels, my homepage simply recommends the same things I have seen a thousand times. But here are some I would recommend to everyone

    Kurzgesagt

    https://www.youtube.com/c/inanutshell

Incredibly complex subjects made accessible for everyone. If you are one of the three people that have not watched this channel - then you are welcome.

    Historia Civilis

    https://www.youtube.com/c/HistoriaCivilis

My favorite channel, related to matters of history. Incredibly throughout and a great storyteller, this man makes roman history come to life.

    Flashgitz

    https://www.youtube.com/c/Flashgitz

Not for everyone granted, but I find them fucking hilarious. Step off your horse before visiting.

    Agadmator

    https://www.youtube.com/c/AGADMATOR

If you are interested in chess, this is the channel for you. Agadmator is without equal in his ability to explain complex situations so anyone can follow - truly a joy to watch.

    Internet Historian

    https://www.youtube.com/c/InternetHistorian

Another channel that is dedicated to bullshitery. But he is funny as hell.

Outside Xbox, https://youtube.com/user/outsidexbox and their sister channel Outside Xtra https://youtube.com/c/outsidextra

Videogame channels, as the name might suggest. Outside Xbox primarily do Xbox games, although they've loosened that a bit over the last couple of years, while Outside Xtra do whatever takes their fancy. Both channels do a mix of list videos and let's plays (often just snippets for upcoming stuff rather than full playthroughs, although they do have a few full ones between them), and they've started doing some tabletop stuff as well - the Oxventure, which is a light-hearted D&D adventure with a flexible approach to rules; maybe not for D&D purists, but very entertaining otherwise, and a Blades in the Dark campaign which is a bit more serious.

Overall, they're as much comedy as they are journalism (not that they really call themselves journalists, to be fair), with a lot of the humour coming from the fact that by their own admission, they're not the best gamers in the world.

All of my recommendations are weeb stuff.

But I do have one that's neat!
    https://www.youtube.com/c/OverlySarcasticProductionsChannel

They have a few different sections -
Trope Talks: Red goes over common tropes in media, what they mean, variations of them, and examples of them in media. (Like Mary Sues!)
History: Blue goes over famous historical events, both popular an unknown. He also does pieces on famous rulers and civilizations and gives an overview about 'em. (The Ottoman Empire!)
History makers: Blue will go over famous figures in history that influenced the world in some way. Like Ibn Khaldun, the first historiographer.
Summarized: Red goes over famous myths and legends. Started out with Shakespeare and the classics and moved on to miscellaneous myths. (Journey to the West)

Red's videos generally have a lot of enjoyable sketches to go along with the talk. Blue less so, I think, but still a few.

I'm sure most folks know of OSP, as they're kinda OGs in Youtube, but hey, maybe someone new will find 'em.

https://www.youtube.com/c/MakeEverythingTv - A guy trying to recreate every step in technology advancement. I don't agree with all his methods, but its interesting to see the advancement laid out.

https://www.youtube.com/c/tested - The guy from Myth Busters, he does a array of content. I really like his Tools tips and Shop infrastructure playlists.

https://www.youtube.com/c/karljobst - While I would find watch people speed run boring as shit, hearing about records and the work behind them is surprisingly interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/c/crashcourse - I assume most people know this one. Bite sized lessons, I have rewatched their history ones multiple times and actually got rather into literature which I didnt expect.

@Jon got me ages ago with a clip of Rushia raging that totally destroyed my YT algorithm.

I am now a proud Shrimp and Takodachi.

Personally tend to follow the vshojo girls more than hololive, but I do tend to lurk a bit sometimes.

It's more that they showed me a side of themselves that I didn't like and couldn't get past. Once you see a side of an entertainer that you don't like it colours your perception of them, esp with vtubers who have specific personas that they show off as their 'thing'. So it broke that barrier for me.

I mean, that's fair. No one handled it in any way well.

From what I understand the general consensus was that he tried to use the situation to self promote and stuff, and they kind of turned their communities against him?

I don't actually know the full story because I refused to get drawn into it and basically just stopped watching them all for a while. So it doesn't really color my perception of them at all.

Edit: Back on topic, ShyLily is definitely worth checking out if you just want a lewd orca girl vtuber.

Indies and small corpos are where it's at. Chat moves at a slower speed, so you can actually interact with them - Nijisanji and Tsunderia are both pretty good, although still not 'small' corpos. Urara (manager at Tsunderia, often referred to as 'Slugma' for Slug-Manager) is entertaining, and absolutely takes no shit, but streams very rarely by herself. But a majority of non-Holo vtubers are Twitch, not Youtube. If you want to watch a top tier indie, then Nina Saotome is live on Twitch tonight at 20:00 UTC, and she is one of the best indies I have seen (for chatting/karaoke streams) (edit - link here)

I cannot believe how I went from "I have no interest in streamers, why would I watch someone else playing a game" to literally having a stream on... pretty much all the time as background noise through Covid. My Youtube recommendations are all anime streamers and clipping channels.

Yeah, I migrated over when youtube video makers started streaming to fill up spare time. I remember I checked out someone's twitter to see if they were still alive, as they'd not posted in months... Found out they streamed about thrice a week. So watched the streams. Then I picked up their friends, because they'd raid out...

That said, I don't actually watch any of the Holo talents. I'll catch some clips, and watch the pulled together karaoke bits, but that's about it. I I have tried to watch some of the larger streamers, but it's so much more similar to watching TV whilst yelling at it, than it is to the cozy vibes in sub-50 viewer streams.

First smaller streamer I started watching I accidentally stayed up until four AM watching, because she was doing a deep-dive on Beyblade world championships, and had a ridiculous amount of knowledge on them... Then ended up in the "rope cutting speed run" part of youtube.

We generally just keep an eye out for the clips that are produced. There is too much content being generated daily to keep up with any of them when you work full time.

I've got my one Hololive streamer that I keep up with all the time, Aki, and then generally just clips for others. I still like Holo more than any other corporate.

If it's just for hanging out and enjoying your time while working on stuff, small indies are great. There are hundreds of little micro-communities full of nice people to hang with.

My recommendations would consist of just these two at the moment.

https://www.youtube.com/c/DarkViperAU A GTA V speedrunner who branched out into various challenge runs of the game. A pacifist challenge, a no-hit challenge, and various game mod challenges.

https://www.youtube.com/c/SsethTzeentach A video game reviewer whose reviews are biazrre, fast-paced, meme-laden, and frequently sarcastic. He tends to review sandbox games with exploitable crafting mechanics and faction/relationship-based gameplay.
