500 Internal Server Error Request Timeout

Has anyone else been having this problem? I keet getting this message whenever I tried to go on the site, it just now actually loaded. Could be something on my end, but everything else works fine, other sites load up no problem. Some traffic issues, perhaps?

I was getting it regularly a few weeks ago. It's tapered off now and is rare, but I think I did see it once more recently. Not often enough anymore to be noteworthy for me.

The frequency of the error has definitely picked up.

I blame the loss of net neutrality.

It's the catch-all scapegoat, like Obamacare and the Koch brothers. Only nettier.

I'm investigating. Let me know when it happens (exact time helps). Also a screengrab would be helpful.

Not sure if I'm doing the correct thing reviving the thread, but I thought I should mention it.

The site was unavailable for me today for about 40 minutes, between 8.35 and 9.15 am approximately. There was no Internal Server Error message, just a notification that either the site was unavailable or my connection was at fault. Other stuff loaded up fine, so I'm assuming the former.

I hope I'm not just kicking up dirt for no reason

EDIT: Stupidly forgot to mention time was GMT+2

I had the same thing as Scott Press when I was mobile browsing the site this morning, roughly around 7 AM EST IIRC. I'd click a link and it would show the loading icon for about a minute and then a notification that the connection failed.

I've identified a source of the issue. Our backup process runs at 5am central, and previously ran much more quickly. It's been running slowly, causing timeouts due to MySQL locks held on tables. Any issues not around 5am CST are unrelated, I don't know of any issues that would have impacted people at 9am GMT+2 but I'll keep looking.

It's not yet fixed, but getting close to a resolution. Thanks for the information everyone.

I've moved the backup process to 2AM CST (7am GMT) for now to impact the least amount of people.

FYI just happened again at 10:34 PM CST in the United States central timezone. about a minute ago. Not sure if related just letting you know.

2:05 AM as well. Going to sleep in a bit after a few last tries at finding a pattern.

2:05AM is somewhat expected, backups now run at that time. They take about 3-3.5 minutes, and hold read locks while running.

    10:34PM is not expected.

Happened literally a minute ago, so I'm duly reporting.

    ---------- Post automerged at 05:57 ---------- Previous post was at 04:43 ----------

Again just now, three times within a span of approximately six minutes. Ravenclaw, do you still want people reporting on this?

Again just now, site was unresponsive for about 10 minutes from 5.50 to 6.00 am GMT+2. Ravenclaw, do you still want people reporting on this?

EDIT: don't I feel like a whiny bitch, but I thought I should bring it to attention that the site's been all over the place for me this morning (it's 9 am now for me)--timeout after timeout. Anyone else having a similar experience?

I had some issues on my main comp this morning as well. Sorry to say I didn't log the time as I just assumed it was in the changed schedule, but I think it was roughly around 2 AM EST.
