I miss Dumbledore. I cry every time I read a fic where he's senile or manipulatively evil. I weep every time I see him beaten by some douchey teenager and his mary-sue girlfriend.

I'm looking for fics where Dumbledore is the badass wizard that scared Voldemort and beat Grindlewald.

Edit: Not Dumbledore-centric fics, just one where he is a positive influence on Harry's life and not the devil in disguise.

 

I'd also like to find one of these stories, where he's more of a positive influence/good character, and not just a poorly written, one dimensional "HAHA I HAVEZ UR MONEYZ!" manipulative bastard.

I think they're pretty rare, though; most authors/authoresses douche out, and buy into cliches.

The closest thing I've read is moshpitstories' Echoes of Power: Anger.
It's got Dumbledore in an active working relationship with Harry.

Going to warn you though, it's hardly standard DLP fare - while it doesn't really fall into cliches, the author and DLP had a bit of a spat about 3 years ago. The pacing is also weird, with 370k words covering a month of time in the story, though enough happens for that not to be incredibly slow (at the rate the plot progresses, the rest of the story could be covered in another 500k words or so). You'd have to read the last 5 chapters to get that though, because a lot of plot points are resolved/explained there.

And yeah whatever, probably future H/G, though its not really a problem with her not being a Mary Sue.

Edit: and yeah I'm kinda annoyed that there don't seem to be any Mentor!Dumbledore fics at all, nmb's work excluded.

I remember reading a somewhat ridiculous fic recently involving Dumbledore actually training Harry for some reason. There were a lot of dark wizards left around Europe and at one point Dumbles and Harry attacked one of them in a magical tower. Another memorable thing about the fic was that Ron wasn't bashed at all, I remember Harry training against him with a bunch of handicaps. I'll look around and see if I can find it.

Dumbledore is pretty good in neren's Incorruptible (look in WBA), but unfortunately it hasn't been updated in a while.

Normally, any fic without the words "manipulative," "coot," or "goat" in reference to Dumbledore are on the right track. Fics that also feature him in relatively small doses are on the right path towards a properly characterized Dumbledore as well.

 

I second Shezza's Dumbledore, he was very very competent.

 

Right, totally forgot: Perspicacity's Dagger and Rose has a mentor!Dumbledore but it's been a while since I've read it so I can't really comment on the quality. On the plus side, it's H/Fleur.

 

Damn, just thought of the perfect fic! Dumbledore in Partially Kissed Hero is spectacularly well-written and is a great example of a good mentor figure.
