Where is Diagon Alley? Is is in the middle of London? If so, why do the books never describe the skyscrapers and other Muggle buildings that would inevitably be seen beyond the low outlines of stores in the Alley? How would Muggle contractors and city planners miss a big huge chunk of land not being used or noticed? Is the entire Alley in a kind of pocket universe only accessible by Apprarating in or through the Leaky Cauldron? How can this be if Gringotts vaults are 'miles' under London?

This is an issue that I have never understood. Where is Diagon Alley?

 

I personally don't think Rowling gave that much thought to where exactly Diagon alley is. It's possibly just a section of back alleys that the ministry of magic owns and keeps muggle contractors away from, but it could be somewhere else intirerly and the portal in the back of the leaky cauldron is just that, a portal to where ever the alley is. That would make more since from a wizarding perspective as people could expand as they needed without worrying about the muggles noticing.
