    So he took the sign down in 2015 because the public (potential customers as in the market) didn't favor that. Separate from the whole SCOTUS angle, what's wrong with that?

    Because the market isn't perfect. Sometimes you live in a small rural town and the only hardware store has that sign up and you are literally the only openly gay person in a town of 1,000. What do you do then? Make the hour plus drive to the next town big enough to have a hardware store every time you need to get something?

    In a perfect world, yes, letting the market gradually get rid of this behavior would be possible. But it isn't a perfect world. It's much easier to just tell people "no, you fuck. Of course you can't refuse service to her because she's black/gay/bisexual/female/whatever."

    In a perfect world, people would be allowed to put up racist signs. But they woudn't, because they woudn't be racist.

    In a perfect world, the market would take care of it, because the market would be against racism.

    People can be allowed to put up racist signs, so long as they don't want to.
