Ok so I want to get a 500gb hdd instead of my 120. I tried searching on the net, but I just been seeing that disk imaging is for backups. What I want to know is if i image my current hdd can i put it on the 500 gb one and extract or something and have it the exact copy of my 120 hdd?

Norton Ghost. And if you don't want to fork out $70 then try Shadow Copy.

You can use a bootable linux distro, mount both disks, then use dd to write everything from the old disk to the larger one.

Then you just need to adjust the partition table and you're good to go.
