So I've started putting together a DLP political survey but it's proving to be a rather more substantial piece of work than the fanfic survey. It would therefore be good to get some more people involved to spread the load. Let me know if you're interested/have suggestions.

The proposed structure of the survey is as follows:

    1. Demographic info

Covers basic demographic data like age, gender, location, etc.

    2. Social Values

    Inequality/meritocracy
Protected characteristics, positive discrimination and "punching up"
    "Safe spaces"
    Diversity & immigration
    Transgender politics
    Feminism

    (This section is almost complete)

    3. Political Values and Policy

Constitutional matters (forms of democracy, centralisation, codified constitutions)
    Policing, justice and freedoms
    Privacy and communications
    Environment
    Energy
    Housing/land use
    Transport
    Health
    Immigration policy, demographics and population
    Employment
    Education

(Defence matters are in section 5)

    4. Economic Values and Policy

Tax (levels and distribution, income vs. wealth)
    Borrowing (levels, limits, appropriate uses)
Spending levels and welfare inc. universal income
    Monetary policy inc. helicopter money
    Public vs private sector
    Economic inequality
    Globalisation, nationalisation, free trade

    5. International Relations

Military (spending levels, size, correct use, respect for, economic role)
Global balance of power including USA, Russia, China, EU (present and future)
    Terrorism
    Sanctions
    Isolationism vs interference
    Globalism

    6. Religion

Basically the religion survey we did a couple years back

Do you want to have a question on government story of scientific research?
How much should the government spend on research?
    0, $10 million annually, 100 million annually, 1 billion, 10 billion, 100 billion?
Though I wonder if it should be clarified to be grants (as NASA's budget is a ton of research, but isn't something directly dictated by the US Congress)
    Likewise, government support of arts?

Just curious since I don’t see a category, you got anything on artificial intelligence/space travel/bioethics etc? Don’t really see a tech section

I think the questions on economics should be more abstract or linked into GDP, because otherwise it'd end up as a very national-focused survey when we've got a broad international membership here.

EDIT: Continuing @Arthellion's point, there should be a section on social media and the effect of tech on society.

The tech stuff might be tricky because at what point does this become a survey about life, universe and everything? The crossover is there, but going too deep into it will boggle things down imo.

@Taure I don't know what you need help with, but if you think I can help, message me. I'll be interested to take the survey and see the results in any case.

If you want to get into the nitty gritty a question about strategic voting and split ballots would be interesting.

So you just go for party lines, or will you vote for the a different local politician/party than the national. Have you/would you vote strategically, ie vote for a different party/person than you actually want because it would provide a better over all result (I think this is more relivant for those of us in a Parliament system).

Should we really be asking about absolute amounts? I mean, the US is likely to spend more than Israel and Israel more than the Philippines.

This is fairly critical IMO, and will become an ever greater issue in the next decade. With the rise of the CRISPR editing protocol, specific gene editing is now exceedingly (comparatively) easy and getting more accurate by the day. You only have to look at He Jiankui to see the can of worms we're about to open up.

There are ways to do it safely, but the question then becomes ethics. How far can/should we go? What's off limits?

Ethics is, I think, an interesting point. Driverless cars pose very interesting questions, such as what should the AI aim for in a crash szenario - protecting the driver? Protecting pedestrians or the passengers of other cars? Aiming for the least amount of deaths/injuries? Protecting the young, the old, the innocent?
Who should be liable in a crash? The owner of the car, the non-driver, the manufacturer?

Without derailing the thread to much, the ethics questions in regards to driverless cars have always seemed a bit silly to me.
In, say, fifty years or so, when there is a generation or two who has grown up with no "normal" cars on the road, the question will be very different. Namely, why didn't we ban the barbaric practice of allowing people to drive any sooner.
Seeing as how comparably safe the driverless cars already are, it could prevent literally thousands of deaths each year in the US alone.
