Do you think Harry ever became as skilled as Dumbledore and Voldemort?

In the end of DH Harry is wizard who can fight Death Eaters or Dark wizards and bring them down. Harry is probably as good as Aurors at that time. Do you think he ever came anywhere close to Dumbledore and Voldemort's level in the later years of his life?

    No.

He neither has the natural grasp of magic or the work ethic.

Maybe around James' or Lupin's level? Not as neurotic as Voldemort or Dumbledore, or as creative as Snape or Lily. But powerful, and probably dangerous in a tight spot.

The canon protagonist never reached the level of competency of his parents, their friends or their enemies.

Nope. That wasn't the type of character that JKR was trying to write. She wasn't trying to write a story about 'the genius'. She was trying to write a story about the 'normal boy' and how bravery and courage and all that shit is better than any natural talent.

Which, by the way, I call bullshit. In the real world, the normal man rarely amounts to anything, and anything else to the contrary is just wish-fulfillment.

Dumbledore and Voldemort were geniuses and among the most powerful wizards in history, Harry was in Dumbledore's words "reasonably talented" - a bit above average with shoddy work ethic.

Which is, in essence, the entirety of the HP series, to a degree.

Harry's character may not be one with such a future being likely, but that's what fanfiction is for, isn't it? We see potential, and we abuse the fuck out of it.

In all fairness, Harry ends up as the Head of the Auror Office, so he's probably the best Auror in Britain. He probably really applied himself in his profession. Not everyone who was slack at school remains slack in later life. If they can really focus on their passions and ignore all the other stuff, sometimes they begin to excel. So I'd say that Harry would be very capable in combating dark wizards, but less so in other areas of magic. So, perhaps he could go toe to toe with Voldemort or Dumbledore in a magical duel, but he'd have less knowledge and aptitude than them in most other aspects of magic.

He'll have to be at least competent to be Head Auror. I'd probably say he has more of a mind for battle and tactics during fighting rather than any natural inclination towards creativity or knowledge, like Voldemort/Dumbledore.

I suppose it's been shown he has a rather strong will so if he wanted, he probably could become very competent.

Plus he is also the master of the Elder Wand which would help him grasp the other forms of magic much easier.

I think, maybe HP needs to be read as socialist propaganda. In light of that, exceptionally able individuals, no matter their background, are inconvenient. The protagonist would not become one of them.

Harry is Lupin's level by the end of DH. James was very young when he died so Harry would probably be better than his dad.

That's a fanon concept, I think..The Elder Wand powers your spells, it doesn't mean you learn other magics so easily.

In DH Dolohov kills Lupin. Dolohov also beats Ron and Harry but Hermione wins against him. I don't know what to make of it. The book also has Molly kill Bellatrix. :awesome

What to make of it is that a duel is not always a fair test of general magical skill, especially in something as chaotic as a battle.

In that case, Snape killed Dumbledore so Snape>Dumbledore. Dolohov and Antonin were pretty bad ass DEs in the first war, IIRC, and proved themselves throughout it. Hermione won because Rowling wasn't about to kill one of the three main protagonists and Molly killed Bellatrix because of wtf hax.

I always thought the Elder Wand lets you use spells easily and also lets you do spells which you normally couldn't. Say if Harry wanted to use Fiendfyre, normally he would kill himself like Crabbe however with the Elder Wand he could control it.

Right, but he hasn't learned anything. The moment he puts the Elder Wand down he can't do those spells in the same way. So the wand hasn't taught him the magic ("Elder Wand which would help him grasp the other forms of magic"), it just temporarily boosts his ability.

I wish I could recall a fic I read where it followed Harry post DH in a world where he kinda realised how much lucky he actually had in the war. It was a bit cliche, with the usual training to become better but it painted a nice little picture of a Harry whose will power was used to better himself. Not a sudden intelligence boost via potions or an awakening of a secret power passed down by Merlin.

I agree. But do you think Harry could do it without the Elder Wand? He did learn the Patranous Charm in his 3rd year and Stunning in his 4th year.

Logically Harry should do that. Because everyone would look at him as the man who beat the worst Dark Lord. They would probably look at him like they did with Dumbledore (Greatest Wizard alive). And if a future Dark Lord arises thay would look to him to defeat him.
