It's that time of year again. A number of DLPers have traditionally gathered on IRC to ridicule watch the Eurovision Final and I don't doubt it will be similar tonight. However, for people who don't go on IRC, I thought I would create a thread. Eurovision is one of those things where the fun comes from enjoying it as a group.

Each country will have its own domestic broadcaster, but you will also be able to follow it (without commentary) on YouTube:

So: share your thoughts on the acts, debate who will get your vote, predict the hilariously political voting, and discuss all other matters Eurovision here.

First year that North Macedonia get to showcase their new name. Maybe they'll get more Greek votes this year XD

Wanna see how far the French entry "annoying guy on youtube" can go.

Germany's act comes on... yeah, they're not going to do well this year.

To be fair, that was the obvious conclusion from the moment they were announced. The song is forgettable at best – I don’t think I’ve ever heard it on the radio here! – and the performers are just… bland, I suppose. How they got maximum points from the voting public is still beyond me.

Song isn't super catchy in melody, though it has a catchy lyric. Delivery is a bit flat. Staging is insufficiently camp.

    Plastic sleeves are lol.
    --- Post automerged ---
    Albania: boring/10

Song is slow, stage is empty, singer not hot enough to rescue this mess.
    --- Post automerged ---
    Czech Republic: 7.5/10

Catchy, upbeat, colourful, fun visuals in the chorus.

-1 for being creepy One Direction in sweaters.

Also, I thought they were Czechia now.
    --- Post automerged ---
    Germany: 5/10

Too slow, but ok singing. Blonde looked like she was miming. Just having their giant faces on the screen for visuals was weird.

We’re gonna need a miracle, folks. Nothing exciting about that performance, either.

    Russia: 8/10

Almost symphonic metal type song, though thoroughly pop. Only song so far that I could imagine myself listening to willingly outside of the Eurovision.
    --- Post automerged ---
Denmark: 6/10, started well but went on too long, boring staging.

San Marino: 8/10 shit, but so Eurovision.

Former Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: 6/10, ok but boring/generic.
    --- Post automerged ---
    Strong sequence of acts!

Sweden: 8/10 Singer was good, song was reasonably catchy, visuals ok but nothing special. Typical Sweden for the last few years: well produced song, good singer, but ultimately lacking character/heart (and no, recruiting the entire black population of Sweden doesn't count as character).

Slovenia: 8/10. Song is less catchy, but it has the heart that many others lack. Astronomy visuals were cool.

Cyrpus: I like electro-pop so this is up my street. Chick's costume is weird and resulted in my dad saying "I thought Madonna was on later". 8/10
    --- Post automerged ---
    Netherlands: 5/10, slow

Greece: oh dear. It's a singing wedding cake. A shit one. 3/10.
    --- Post automerged ---
Israel: 5/10 Strong effort by Israel in their attempt to avoid hosting again next year.

Norway: YES the bald guy! 9.5/10 it will be hard to beat this.
    --- Post automerged ---
Iceland: lol/10. If Nazi Germany had entered Eurovision, this would have been their act.

    Estonia: forgettable but ok 6/10.

Belarus: 7/10, performer was good but had a boring song.

    Azerbaijan: 4/10, dull.

France: Tolerance has gone too far/10

Italy: 7/10 clapping thing was genius

Serbia: hot chick, song was slow but one of the better slow ones 7/10

    Switzerland: meh, 4/10

Australia: if Norway hadn't done so well, this would be my top pick. 9/10 Catchy and eye-catching.

Spain: best entry in years, but still not great. 7/10.

    Will vote Norway.

The rest was worse. Simple as. I voted for them as well.

Of all our recent last-or-nearly-last entries, this was average in my books. I liked Jamie-Lee a lot, for instance -- still listen to it occasionally -- and others less ... so eh. Favourite as far as music was concerned was Slovenia, right up my alley ... maybe we should try something like that next year. Indie/electro-pop.

Also! I still demand the everyone watch the best entry that never made it. This came second in Estonia:

    5/5 would vote again.

Well... Netherlands won. Congrats I guess. Norway was shafted by the juries, they had the most audience votes. North Macedonia on the other hand got the second most points by the juries. How did that happen? It was also far too long.

I watched it on TV yesterday. How about you google it and see if you can't find the full version.

I vastly preferred Makeda’s entry, and I think it could’ve done quite well against yesterday’s competition. But no use crying over spilled milk.

Overall, I think we have a deserved winner. A perfectly serviceable song, with flashy aesthetics reduced to the minimum – so pretty much the exact opposite of what we had last year. Once the jury votes were in, I was a bit afraid we’d see North Macedonia come out on top, as I didn’t like that song at all. And yes, Norway should’ve earned a few more points from the juries.

Honestly not a fan of the juries. Not only do their decisions make little sense, but they also tend to ruin 0-point streaks.

Maybe, but the juries were introduced for a reason. I'd rather have the current sytem than the old. Neighbours always voting for each other, depending on ethnicity or a shared border. The voting used to be far more biased, in my opinion.

    You're welcome.

Feel like the juries were just as guilty of this yesterday though. Very few 12 pointers went anywhere but to the neighbours.

If I were to do it I would combine the juries and televotes from each country, so that each country only presents one set of points. I think this would lower the amount of criticisms against the juries while still making sure the Finns can never win again.
