Just got this game one day before the UK release date (thanks PLAY) and I can confirm, it is the awesome. My most highly anticipated game of the year, and its better then all the titles I've played so far, Fable 2 and Far Cry 2 included.

So, is anyone else playing this game? Is anyone disappointed that they didn't go for a more classic attempt at Fallout (isometric, turn based combat, etc) as Van Buren would have been? Oh, and importantly, what did you do to Megaton?

Me goes play some more now. Is :awesome.

Picked it up this past Monday at the midnight release, and I agree, this game is incredibly awesome.

While it's a huge difference from the traditional isometric style of the past, I don't really think a game of that style could succeed in today's game market. It just wouldn't work, it's too outdated.

Megaton's been interesting. Took a while to get up the skill to fix the major problem for me.

I'll say one thing.. when you start playing this game, it gets pretty immersive.
I find myself doing things I wouldn't normally do in a game (being excessively cautious, paranoid, and sneaking around) simply because of the atmosphere.

That said, for incredible hilarity, the next time a raider pulls out a hand-grenade to toss at you:

Open up the targeting system and shoot it. :awesome

Fallout is good, but it lacks the certain something that makes it great. The engine seems ripped right from Oblivion (which I loved in it's own right), and some of the NPC's are just wooden and...unexpressive.

I love the atmosphere, I think they captured that perfectly, and don't have a problem with the gameplay, I just..I dunno. I guess a case of where I'd never be truly happy with anything they did for Fallout 3, after waiting so long.

I'm a huge Oblivion fan and people have been saying that Fallout is just Oblivion with guns. What's it actually like?

I hate the Oblivion-with-guns comparison when applied to any game, be it S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Fallout. The game is obviously running on the Oblivion engine, but the only direct comparison I could make with Oblivion is that some of the character animations seem a bit wooded.

Otherwise, the gameplay is completely different, with gunplay and V.A.T.S. making the combat feel like an entirely new (and awesome) beast. The developers have gone to great lengths to avoid the situation you had in Oblivion with the roughly 8 npc voices, now they all sound different. Plus, Liam Neeson is your father.

The Wasteland is just such an oppressively hostile environment that the atmosphere is completely different to Oblivion, and exploring a ruined school filled with raiders and giant mutant ants is infinitely more interesting then exploring caves.

I agree with Lokesin, there's no way they could have released a top-down game now and expected mainstream commercial success (which Fallout 3 obviously wishes to garner). Maybe if they'd released Van Buren in 2003... Ah well.

Oh, and a quick question with spoilers:

Did anyone not kill the Overseer? If so, can you get his daughter to leave the vault with you? I blew his head off and his daughter wasn't too happy about it!

So I've got 60 euros. Is it worth it?

That's a plus, you can only hear the same voice Dunmer rasp at you so many times before you throw your controller against the wall.

I mostly play games on the xbox but I hear Bethesda games are far better on the PC. Truth?

That's got to be the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

PC Fallout 3 is the exact same except you have mod tools and quite possibly, the console.

    Also, it's sixty Euros?

    Fuck French computers.

That's what the Doctor said when you popped screaming out of your mom. :awesome Seriously though, I've never played a proper game on the PC but PC fags have the same superiority complex that PS3 users have when it comes to xbox.

    France for the midterm?

It most definitely depends on your computer, as there is no general standard for computer quality, but if you look at even moderately good computers they run games like clock-work in comparison.

Example: I have Oblivion for both PC and PS3. The PC version runs like a piece of shit -it glitches and I suddenly fall through the screen, gameplay is choppy at random points, and the characters all look sallow and palish, while the Playstation 3 version is smooth sailing with very few glitches. The only advantage I see is loading screen time on the PC where mine works in just a couple seconds while the PS3 takes like twenty.

Counterexample: I have played CoD4 on both my PC and a friends Xbox. My computer version is faster, smoother, and a lot funner than the Xbox verison. This is because I have the keyboard versatility, the quickness at which I can move my mouse around, and a more efficient system.

Make what you will of it.

So I hear it's got like 12 hours of fucking playtime. True/false?

I'm sick of this shit, even fucking Rock Band 2 took less then 20 hours to get to the ending credits on world tour, and that damned pack was like 200$ Make a damned game like Baldur's Gate or something that takes 30 hours damnit!

Just played 4 hours of it, pretty fun. It uses the oblivion engine, so in my opinion the combat system sucks, and npcs suck. The V.A.T aiming helps alot, otherwise the games too dam hard. There is a bunch of weapons, and npc quests to do, and some radioactive zombies. Personally i don't see myself playing this game ever again, its a one-time thing.

If that's true, then the game fails. The funnest part of Fallout was playing it a dozen times and always finding new stuff.

Whut? I've just been playing for the past twelve hours, and I haven't even found the second town yet! Maybe the main story is 12 hours long (which isn't too shabby) but trust me there is an enormous amount of stuff to do for side-quests. Well beyond 12 hours, that's for sure.

I cannot effing wait until I unlock the Bloody Mess perk. My favourite kill so far was blowing a sniper's leg off, then watching him fall off the ledge he'd been precariously balancing on.

So how are most people playing, good, evil or grey? I'm being a goody-two-shoes so far, doesn't mean I have any qualms about breaking into someone's house and stealing all their stuff, but nobody's perfect...

    Thank fake god then.

But to be fair, Oblivion supposedly had 40+ they claimed, but the main quest could easily be finished in a day, you got the extra time from just wandering around in the woods looking at crap.

God knows I spent all my times going into the little dime a dozen holes in the ground in Morrowind and Oblivion screwing around. I forgot all about the main quest several times.

Same, the mainquest could be completed at like lvl 18 and 8hours playing, I was level 41 and had 39hours playtime when I had run out of quests (or only had boring quests left). I "got" fallout3 yesterday, I've yet to test it though.

It will take longer than 12 hours to complete even the main quest. especially if the game fucks you over like it did me, Seven Super Mutant Brutes and a few regular Super Mutants thrown in to spice it up. Oh and lest we forget the Mini-guns the Brutes carry. Or their aim, that is so good the worlds best snipers turn green with envy over it.

The game is freaking awesome and it's so hard to be a good guy in the game. The level cap sucks quite a bit, but the perks are brilliant. Like the Mysterious stranger perk. That has to be my favorite perk so far.

As for the main quest I haven't been playing it to much. I've been trying to find all the other vaults and explore anything I find.

Actually, because of the levelling system in oblivion, i.e. monsters level with you, it's entirely possible to complete the game at level 2. (one of the main quests requires you to level I believe)

I'm currently playing a game that is about 3/4 of the way through the main quest and only at level 7.

If fallout is anything like oblivion then I can see my self wasting hundreds of hours on it doing nothing pertinent to the main quest at all, but loving every minute of it.
