If you didn't know, the countdown was to the exact date and time that the darklordpotter.net domain was registered:

Fifteen. Years. Can you believe it's been that long?

I can't. I can't believe that DLP has been around for nearly half my life. We've been through a lot. DLP started as a small little phpBB forum running on Zevrillion's desktop in Sweden. I joined on April 1st, 2005 as user #2 with Narf and so many others not far behind. Fifteen years later, here we are as a strong community that's moved beyond it's original HP roots.

DLP started out edgy and like every other forum out there. I mean, some of the old posts are REALLY OLD. Look through the staff's various old alt accounts, like Lord Voldemort who's tagline was "AVADA KEDAVRA" or Harry Potter, Severus Snape. DLP was a victim of the common teenage disease. And yet, despite all this, we've grown up and done so very much. We've:
    • Pushed the envelope on writing quality of HP fanfiction. DLP authors have a good deal of the best stories out there.
    • Created a terrible reputation for ourselves when folks couldn't take the blunt honesty (and sometimes gratuitous asshattery) of DLP's reviews.
    • Launched writing careers and published multiple DLP Anthologies
    • Childishly raided other sites, especially ones centered around Harry/Ginny. We didn't like Ginny back then.
    • Collectively wrote the finest piece of literature, The Office. Sera (LT2000) still hasn't forgiven me for ruining Cho for him.
    • Had our schisms and drama-filled moments.
    • Many in-person meetups around the world.
      • Two of which required me to take care of drunk folk.
    • Really had some shining beacons of quality threads.
    • A ton of fun April Fools jokes, like Dark Lady Ginny, anonymous day.
    • And so so much more. More than I can remember or list, and more to come, I hope.

And yet, what I'm most proud of, is that we have a community that's persisted for fifteen years. We’ve created real friendships that have moved beyond the screen. Today with a global pandemic in full force, DLP is more active than ever and provides a place for us all to gather closer even as we physically isolate.

So I’d like to hear from all of you: what are some of your favorite moments on DLP? What did you find here that you didn’t find elsewhere? Funny stories, IRC quotes, let’s hear it.

P.S. The countdown did have a real, tangible effect beyond marking the anniversary. The end has only just begun. (Edit: See Dragonpox: A DLP Story)

Congratulations DLP. Thanks to all the Admins, Mods and Users.
It's been some fun years on here and I got to read a lot of quality fiction. HP and otherwise :)

I miss the "Totally consensual Hermione" thread.

More seriously, there's too many things to list. I've lurked an awful lot, even before I had an account.

Here's hoping there's many more moments to come.

By far my favorite moments are watching successive generations join and mature into great adults.

Honestly, no real specific memories stand out, Xiph telling me that the feelings I was experiencing, and things I was going through was totally normal, and that I'd grow up into to an okay person was honestly pretty great, is probably one of the few.

Several long nights through my teenage years just staying up and chatting with Zombie or Xiph was pretty amazing.

Getting drunk and telling every single person IRC that I loved them, in an increasingly specific manner was cool too.

I remember the day I graduated High School i was shit posting about it on Discord while I was on the stage.

I also told Discord when I got accepted into college.

The first time I spoke to Paladin was through DMs on IRC while he and I discussed the merits of enlisting or not, since I was seriously considering it at the time and so was he.

I remember Minion roasting the fuck out of me for my edgy name, and talking with him a lot too before he disappeared.

The first time I shaved I was on irc @dhulli told me to shave in the direction of the hair, and I remember that every time I shave for whatever reason.

Recently, staying up with Halt and Blorcyn writing Godbound or any of Halts fics.

D&DLP with War crimes and Genocide

Probably a lot more but thats honestly all I can remember for now, oh yeah, and everyone calling me autistic, and coming out to Ankan by telling him I'd probably fuck him.

honest to fuckin god, with out this place I would've been very lost, and alone in my life. My high school years were lonely and full of depression, even now I'm still a very solitary person with a lot of depressive episodes. I'm glad I have this place where I feel like I can be myself and belong, cause to be honest, that kind of place is hard to find for anyone. So thanks.

Some of the best times I had on DLP were back on IRC in 09/10.

Vash was Unce Unce Uncing, me and Nuhuh did 500 for 500 every night, and Xion tried to kill itself because it became self aware.

Aside from that? It's hard to pick specific moments. Walking through a crowded bar and hearing, "SERATIN?" being roared out.

Every minute of the 5am writing sessions I'd put into Indigo Road when my kid was first born and I had to get used to early mornings.

Most of all though, the last 13 years DLP has been a constant. No matter what was happening irl, I could always turn around and open DLP and know that Oz would have a stupid username, @Taure would be annoyingly inspired, @Zombie would put things into perspective, @Xiph0 would be available to chat, Vlad would be risking a ban and Blaise would still be dead.

I've been on DLP longer than I've known most people in my life today and I can honestly say it's been thirteen years well spent.

Edit: And some of the new people don't suck.

I'm a pretty recent addition to DLP so this is going to be long and say absolutely nothing.
I joined because someone told me that I would find some of the best people here and I have found that to be absolutely true. I've found people who have been immeasurably supportive and kind when I was going through some of the worst times in my life. Thank you for talking me down from panic attacks, for helping me when I was scared, for challenging me to be brave, and for teaching me how to grow. I cannot begin to express how much I love you all.

Thank you for the last few hours. I had no idea what was going on, but I realized how much I love you all. Cheers.

My favorite part is the wide variety of perspectives and life experiences that make discussions here really valuable. Even better, though, is the one thing that unites us, which is a shared passion in quality fanfiction. It’s been a good couple years here, and I look forward to many more.

    Also, Ban Arthellion.

This site has been one of my few constants over the last decade. When I joined I was leaving high school and first stepping out into the world. It has been here as I found my path through university, through my first internship, boyfriend, job and more. It has kept me sane through trying times and provided comfort and humor when I needed it.

My one regret over these last 10 years was not joining IRC and bonding with you guys over the years. It turns out that you guys are all softies on the inside. I should have never been intimidated.

Here is to another 15 years of good memories, discord and forum shenanigans and to hundreds of good stories for both Harry Potter and beyond.

The only thing that would make these next 15 years better is banning @Arthellion.

Reggin getting banned for 'I'll be in my lab' beastiality has got to be up there for funny DLP moments.

Along with Bioplague IRC quote classics like 'soem rocks' and 'walking the cat'. Jon's 'addicted to her body' gets an honourable mention.

Ooof, will probably have more in the morning, but all the wonderful folks I've gotten the chance to meet IRL tops the list. The April Fool's where we all became anonymous is a close second, untangling that when it got denon-ed was such a fun time.

DLP has provided a continuity to my life that is severely lacking in a lot of other respects. Didn't get close friends till the end of high school, and even a lot of those drifted away during college. I've known you fuckers for longer than I've known all of my IRL friends, and honestly consider some of you my friends at this point. I've have been here for about eleven years, which is just a little under half my life since I just turned 23.

I blame you all for anything wrong with me, since my parents are wonderful people and definitely not responsible :p

Oh man, I couldn't possibly choose one thing as my favorite. In order, I suppose:

    - Literally any time that someone tried to step to Giovanni or Perspicacity in the Politics section. This one is fun because it still happens time to time.

    - Anonymous day was probably my favorite of all the April Fools days. Looking forward to seeing tomorrow's.

    - Any of the given Hall of Shame fic threads. That's a black hole of cringe you can lose a couple days down.

But if I had to point to one thing, I'd have to say the people, like everyone else. It's never failed to astound me how despite years and years, we've not only grown as people and gained new members, but done so without losing the core identity we had when we started. And all of the back of a website that started as a fandom about a magical trust fund jock who grew up, married his childhood sweetheart and became a cop.

Cheers, DLP. In the hackneyed words of Pratchett, may the assholes among us continue to be, at heart, a little bit good people, and may our nice guys continue to be just bastardly enough to be worth knowing.

DLP has affected my life more than I ever expected. I don't want to get too mushy, so I'll just thank Xiph for the Davis tips (especially huckleberry soda), Zombie for his constancy, Paradise for the memes, sonder, Nazgus and shouldabeenadog for being incredibly cool, Blorcyn for the vita rays, and everyone for being here.

    :)

I've been a member since the beginning, since its inception, before we even had a name. It's been a wild ride. I like to think I've grown just as much as this forum has over the past decade and a half. From an dumb, edgy high schooler to an (im)mature adult, DLP has been with me. It's been my internet home for so long, I can't imagine how boring my life would be if I didn't have DLPers to shitpost and meme with at 3 in the morning. Especially during this quarantine, discord and gaming has been a godsend, given that none of my friends outside of DLP play anymore.

My friendships on DLP have lasted longer than most outside of it. I keep in touch with so few people from high school, but I've been friends with some on DLP for 15 years now. When I had to move to a different country after high school, I was at the lowest point in my life with no friends or family near me. I had no one but DLP to keep my sanity intact, and I'll always be grateful for that. That will always be my favorite part of DLP.

I’ve been a semi regular for years, had an alt account I lost that had my stupider shit on it, had several careers, got married. Through to all DLP, some time more sometimes less.

The one weird thing about DLP. It is one of the few places on the internet that has changed my opinion on things.

Gun rights, free speech, voting, civil rights.

When I joined I was super libertarian semi edge lord. Now I am much more central, I have options grounded in the debates held on DLP, I held the opinions of many people here highly, and many not so much.

    Thanks Raven and thanks DLP.

As others have said, it's been a journey, and seeing most people mature was neat. I don't really post on DLP much any more, usually just hang out on Discord. But man have I matured a lot since I first started posting, hate looking back at posts by younger me.
