So does anyone know where I can find any good political fics?

I've got a craving for them at the moment. I don't care if they're one shots or million word behemoths as long as they're good.

Could you give us a list of the ones you already know about?

If you'll note my request specified good political fics. I have yet to read a good one where Harry inherits a bunch of titles.

Basically I want good fics that are about politics, whether they're about Harry trying to become minister, Lucius' manipulations or the Head of House Black explaining his reasoning for sponsoring Voldemort. The most important thing is that they're good.

You can basically just search by Susan Bones / HP pairing and find nothing but political fics. Also, same thing with Daphne, but probably only about half.

Snarkiness aside, by all time favorite fic is a political fic. On the Wings of a Phoenix. It's a bit old now, and more of a guilty pleasure for me rather than being the holy grail of writing. There are some things I don't like
such as Harry becoming an animagus, and his relative apathy towards everything
. But it does have a lot of things that you don't really see all that often
such as Harry deciding that Voldemort's side is the more correct one, though his methods leave a lot to be desired
. It's pretty much just a story where Harry's trying to find the truth buried beneath years of old politics, and trying to find what he's truly fighting for.

Gotcha. First one that comes to mind is "Resistance of Azkaban." It's not huge on politics but it has some great scenes involving the Wizengamot and Voldemorts "government."

Another classic is Fayr Warnings brilliant "Reign of Power." It's almost ten years old at this point but is the basis of so many other dark Harry stories it's kind of a must read. Even if it does seem cliche-ridden at this point (however the author started most of the cliches). https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2287647/1/Reign-of-Power

"On the Wings of a Phoenix" is good, and has some great concepts, but it's really boring after a while. Harry's complete lack of interest in anything is really disconcerting. He pretty much spends 35 chapters contemplating a war he doesn't want to take part in.

FYI, back in 2011, DLP had a contest with "politics" as the theme.

I remember House of Shards being pretty decent a few years ago. Not very long (and hasn't been updated for years) unfortunately.

    House of Shards
    By: Lord Basileus
Harry Potter returns to Britain forgotten and with his reputation tarnished by his own past. His exile changed him and not exactly for the better.
    Rated: Fiction T - English - Drama - Harry P., Fleur D. - Chapters: 3 - Words: 16,857 - Reviews: 59 - Favs: 173 - Follows: 265 - Updated: Nov 9, 2010 - Published: Oct 16, 2010 - id: 6402668

Loosely based (so the author says) on the BBC's House of Cards.

Nice to see this thread, after I posted a similar one last year.

Breezed through some of these fics and Resistance of Azkaban sounds interesting. Anyone know if this (or any other) that's H/Hr?

    Lol, what's up with H/Hr?

Anyways, does it have any pairings or does it concentrate more on action and politics? Hankering for a new fic, but can't stand bizarre pairings.

I don't like Harry/Hermione for many reasons, but give me 5 reasonable reasons why they should be together

Its more about action and politics, however a pairing starts with an OC in the last 2 chapters and the short sequel which only has a couple of chapters

A lot of people are rightfully jaded when it comes to H/Hr fics, mostly because they feature ridiculously OOC elements, senseless bashing of every other character including Mrs. Norris, and even if the story's Harry-centric, it can still be summed up as follows:

    1) Hermione was always drop-dead smoking hot behind the bushy hair, buck-teeth and old book smell. All she really needed was a 'guy to make her giggle like a real schoolgirl' to prove how awesome and shiny her farts are, but really she didn't need him anyway because she's an independant Mudblood witch who don't need no man.

    2) Harry gets the DBZ Zenkai-esque power up (I swear I read a fic where he got abused so much that it broke Dumbledore's magical core-binding thingy) so that he's powerful, smart and hot just generally awesome enough* to stand next to Hermione.

*but not too awesome (read: he doesn't deserve her)

As for political(ish) fics, Harry Potter and the Mage's Epoch was really interesting - not sure if silentclock is still working on it, though.

I hope he's still working on it.

You could say that for just about any pairing, it's highly subjective. I don't like H/Hr, but of all the fanon relationships, its one of the ones that requires the least suspension of disbelief, given that it was one of two pairings that were likely to happen in canon. Compared to Harry/Fleur or Harry/Tonks, it makes a lot of sense.

The main reason I don't like H/Hr is Half-Blood Prince Hermione being a huge fuckwit and the plethora of H/Hr stories that have poisoned me against the pairing because they are done so badly that seeing H/Hr makes me think it'll be of similar quality.
