Is a Harem setting is plausible in magical Britain?

We must keep in mind that is is a generally considered theory that the magical world is a bit "behind the times" when compared to the muggle world. Because of magic, there has been less need to push certain types of progress forward and as such, changes come slower more often then not, and things like gender roles, and sexual/marital/partnership changes are included in that. Its probably reasonable to see harems or similar situations as a part of magical society. Throw in the fact that magical power can equate to "strength", "attractiveness", "success", or the ability to provide and support, and it becomes even more likely that such a person could pull in multiple members of the opposite sex quite easily should it be acceptable in the society (or even if its not).

There are other components as well that could play a factor.

One such example would be an imbalance of wizards vs. witches. There are multiple possibilities for this. More likely possibilities such as gender roles in such a society, meaning more men die then women (due to fighting, dangerous jobs, and more), leading to an imbalance in the sexes and less wizards then witches. Or less likely possibilities such as the mixing of veela blood into the wizarding world leading to more women born then men. The combination of the Wizarding world advancing slower then the Muggle world in culture, gender balance, and other such aspects, combined with unique situations within the Magical world, could easily lead to the acceptance (even if its not common) of Harem.

    Except that is completely wrong.

Magic is an equalising tool. Men historically held power because men were, on average, more physically suited to warfare. People with more muscle mass could carry heavier armour or swing a heavier sword. People with longer arms had better reach etc, which lead to them being in control.

There is nothing in canon to suggest this is the case when it comes to magic. In fact, the evidence is the exact opposite, as they had a female Minister of Magic in 1800 or so and a whole litany of other female historical figures.

No. Harems have almost never been a part of historical European culture.

Except for the bit where strength, attractiveness and success did not create harems in the British Isles.

Nope. This entire post goes from stupid to stupider.

Harems are retarded and so are the people who think they make for good fiction, change my mind. The only exception (which I've never seen) is if the harem itself is the source of conflict for the story.

The only good harem fic hasn't been written yet. It's the one where Harry's wives end up murdering either each other or him, as discussed in another thread. Somebody get on that.

No no, the real murderer turned out to be the Auror detective assigned to solve the case, Tonks, whose plan involved murdering all Harry's wives, throwing off suspicion by playing up and fanning discord between them, and getting rid of any evidence she found.
