This question popped into my head today.

In Half-Blood Prince, hunting is mentioned.

How exactly would Wizards or Witches hunt?

Thank you for pointing that out to me.

Could a mod please move this thread into that one?

Actually no, that thread is not for speculation. Sesc is very protective of it.

This question doesn't have an answer so would need this thread to speculate.

Or a new thread for questions that don't deserve their Own thread but don't have definitive answers so need speculation. Like the first version of that thread that was brilliant before it morphed into what it is now.

As for hunting, so many options, transfigured other animals, make noises, bind or stun them. Cook them their right away.

Hunting muggle animals would be simple, magical ones much harder.

I still wish Rowling would explain whether or not the killing curse can kill anything or just wizards, and muggles. Are there some creatures that are resistant to the AK?

I was always under the impression that there was nothing magical about that particular fox.

I think it depends on a lot of things. How dangerous is the animal in question? I might think that, the more dangerous an animal is (for example the Basilisk), the more likely it would be to be immune to the Killing Curse.

Erotic S has the right of it on what ought to go into the thread Innomine linked. I've renamed this thread - in future though please don't use vague thread titles. This isn't reddit and your thread will still be around next week, so if you're going to make one put a little bit of effort into it.

Speaking of which, what's this quote where hunting is mentioned in HBP? That would help as a starting point.

    Onto the actual question:

    • Hagrid has a crossbow - but he had his wand snapped and lives near the forbidden forest, so that's the most likely answer to that.
    • The stunning spell, stupefy, works on magical creatures such as dragons (given a large team) so it seems likely it'd work on animals

Re: the Killing Curse, Moody also kills a spider with it. I think the question you should be asking in regards to this one is whether or not it's illegal for wizards to use it on non-humans. Moody's quote on the Unforgivables is:
"Now . . . those three curses — Avada Kedavra, Imperius, and Cruciatus — are known as the Unforgivable Curses. The use of any one of them on a fellow human being is enough to earn a life sentence in Azkaban. "

But I don't think a regular wizard would cast it, not for something as mundane as hunting. It takes a powerful wizard to cast - and everyone's terrified of it.

Nogtails actually, not Nargles. Since Nogtails look like little pigs, and run around on 4 legs I'd assume if you're hunting them you'd use a spell which didn't do much physical damage so that you can display a trophy if you want to.

Possibly there's even spells specifically designed for hunting, maybe which behead the target cleaning or which paralyse them. I don't see why specific hunting spells wouldn't be a thing, they seem to have spells for everything else.

I think it's important to remember that hunting (in the Muggle world) is a sport and a tradition, not a functional activity. The point is not to use the most efficient or modern means to kill the target as quickly as possible. With that in mind, it seems likely that wizarding hunting would be analogous. They'd ride hippogriffs, not fly brooms, just as Muggles ride horses rather than dirt-bikes. And they may well have a hunting animal perform the kill, just as in traditional Muggle fox hunting the dogs are the ones that kill the animal. For example, with nogtails:

What if they wanted to challenge themselves, to have a more memorable hunt?

Is it possible they might turn to archery, in that case?
