I'm looking for books that bridge the divide between fantasy and sci-fi. Examples include:

    - Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, especially the alien environment of the Stormlight Archive.

    - To a certain extent, Avatar (movie).

What stories could you add to this list?

Historical fantasy could also be included, such as the words of Guy Gavriel Kay.

Dune is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy.

    The Chronicles of Amber.

The Shannara series by Terry Brooks and John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs are the first two that come to mind after Dune.

Here's a bit of an out of the box suggestion: Tales from the Ninth World By Monte Cook.

Collection of 3 short stories set in the Numenera universe.

Technically it's an accompanying piece to the pen and paper rpg, which I love, but a friend of mine read them without having played the game and loved them as well. Also it should serve as a companion to the new Torment game as it's also set in the Numenera setting.

I haven't read it, but the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane supposedly does this. It's on my to-maybe-read list for the same reason. Magic is magic, but it's presented more like science (apparently) and they travel to different planets and whatnot.

Glory Road by Heinlein I think was like this. I read that one when I was about fourteen though, and don't remember it that well. I can't remember any magic specifically in it, but I think there were dragons and other planets and he had a sword instead of a ray gun.

Split Infinity by Piers Anthony is part of a series where there are two separate worlds separated by some kind of dimensional boundary. I think one of the worlds was magic and one was high-tech? Again, haven't read it, but I have it on my to-read list for the same reasons you're asking.

Literally the first thing that came to mind.

The second is Zelazny's Lord of Light.

    Edit:

Ugh. I don't remember throwing many books away in disgust as a child (this from one who forced himself through A Clockwork Orange as a tween), but this was one I couldn't finish.
