Don't you remember the good old days, when calling the police with no good reason ment that you got a cool pin and a stern talking to.

Man, I loved those pins. I had my little sister call three times for those.

I take it they wouldn't do shit if you rang about police abuse, eh? :)

But seriously, he was drunk. What if he actually thought he was in danger? Oh well.

Sadly, Largo is my hometown. No, they wouldn't protect you and yes there is reason to be concerned. The Largo Police are the most discriminatory and power abusive that I know of.

When I walk to my night shift job, I'll get harrassed for being "suspicious" or "prowling" even though I live three blocks from the job and am in uniform. Why? Because I'm a young guy on the streets after dark.

Whenever I go hang with friends, they'll pull the car over and search it. What possible purpose could four early 20's guys have for cruising the streets in a classic car? Obviously we're drug dealers. When they pull us over they ask permission to search the car. If we refuse, then obviously we have something to hide. Ergo, probable cause. If you've got more than twenty in cash, you're the money man and it's confiscated. You can go to court and get it back, if you can prove you have absolutely no connections to any drug dealers (something that's next to impossible in my neighborhood because everyone is dealing).

During a recent raid on one of those ubiquitous dealers (one who I personally know only sold weed), the cops shot him three times. IN THE LEG.

If the cops had me surrounded, I'd be panicked too. I'd go for the high speed chase option to make sure I ended up in honest hands.

Pretty funny. I've thought about calling 911 to report reckless driving. Some jackass in a black and white car with lights on the roof that was excessively speeding. I was even going to get the license plate, but in the end I decided against it...

@caitiff: Surely that's not grounds for probable cause. You're allowed to refuse the request to search your car. Otherwise the police wouldn't even need a search warrant, as they could just ask you if they could search your car or house. Either way you answer, BAM! they're in.

Edit: I wonder how a citizen's arrest on a copper would turn out.

Lucky people! Atleast in your countries you have right to refuse the search request. In my place there is no request, if they feel you are hiding something they just search. Even if they find nothing they will make up some excuse to get you booked unless you have some nice fat bills. In that case you are home free even if your car is filled with weeds!!!!!

Probable cause is very vague and the Largo police are abusive with their power. Probable cause can be assumed when the police witness something that gives them reason to believe a crime is being committed. The assumption is that if we had nothing to hide we wouldn't mind a search. When we refuse or insist on our rights it's suspicious behavior in their minds. A law abiding citizen has nothing to fear from the police right? So why would he refuse to answer their questions or assist them with a "reasonable request"?

And what really irks me is that while I've easily been pulled over a dozen times in the past year, I've never once been given a ticket for doing anything wrong. Why was I pulled over? What had I been doing wrong to attract this kind of attention? Absolutely nothing, they pull me over to harass me. Since when did four white guys in a nice car equal trouble? I won't even get into the hassle when we tried to spend a bit of time at the gun range... The guns were locked in the trunk and it still took us four hours to travel three miles.

If they do claim denial of the request to search as their probable cause, ring up the ACLU and just get them legally raped. I'm pretty sure there's something constitutional about search and seizure. Also, have you tried taking legal action against the police department?

The easiest solution is just leaving Largo.

Yeah but aside from the cops, it's the best little shithole in the area. Tierra Verde is too expensive, Pinellas Park too redneck, St. Petersburg has too many meth-labs, Gulfport too aggressively Black, Seminole too trailer park-y, Indian Rocks too BFE, Tampa too Cuban, Lutz has too many cows... Largo (or Lar-ghetto in local slang) is just plain white trash with bad cops.

The whole county/area is one big shithole but at least we aren't the Orlando/Kissimmi/St. Cloud cesspool of soul sucking commercialism. Ditch the whole idea of Florida being a nice place right now. There are only a few places worth being but they're all horrible places to live. Even visiting aint the brightest idea.

Tampa/St. Petersburg I've just covered. Miami hardly speaks english and is infested with drug dealers and hatians. Orlando and it's environs are owned by the Mouse and Hollywood, fake and a money pit. Daytona and Panama City are only good for drunken college students. Cocoa and Cape Canaveral are full of G-men, the government owns that county avoid at all costs. The Keys have an entirely different culture from the (old family natives, those who were around before the revolution, are sometimes called Conchs), you just don't belong here and they make sure you know it. Key West is another tourist trap, but this one run by middle aged homosexuals (nothing wrong with it, just that you'll get no play inMainland this town), the straight population are all Conchs.

Unless you plan to live here, stay the fuck away from the big cities, even then live elsewhere and commute if you can. If you actually want to get anything from a visit to Florida beyond sunburn and an empty wallet visit some of the historic forts, swim in the springs, see the manatees, and visit the gators in the everglades. The state is beautiful, the people are ugly as sin.

Kinda off topic, but I remember hearing a couple of years ago about two people who were high on meth that called the police. They said they were standing in a field with a whole bunch of people, but none of them spoke english.

The connection was lost, and later the next day, two people were discovered frozen to death in a field full of cows.

    Now that is fucked up.

I don't think you can get that fucked up from just meth. I mean, I've never even heard of hallucination on that scale with meth. Maybe LSD or Mescaline, but not meth.

I am just passing on what I heard, I mean I'm not a meth expert or anything.
