If a random person off the street does it, it's what you described in your post. If it's someone with a history of interesting opinions about Jews like Rashida Tlaib, who definitely knows better, then it's just her best effort to be shitty to people while looking like she has the moral high ground.

    Sometimes the messenger does matter.

Fair, that's true enough. I don't know anything about Tlaib one way or the other, so I couldn't comment on anything in that regard. I'll take your word for it re: her history.

So holy shit. All four 1 seeds in the NHL playoffs lost in the first round. Don't think that has ever happened before.

I think its coming in June/July time...or so they're saying at the moment. Its been pushed back multiple times. Its complete nonsense, and will prove pretty much ineffectual. I think they found that the new encrypted chrome search bypasses the age filter, and thats not even going into VPNs. Not to mention the law doesn't cover any site which runs for free, or for which porn is below a certain % of the content.

And on top of all that, it uses a really out of date definition for what is porn. Its only videos and stills from videos. Photographs don't count, and text doesn't count.

Meanwhile, a loose drain cover and an accident with a bridge caused disruption and further headaches for the Williams team during practice for the F1 race in Baku.

Something like this happens every couple of years, most famously so perhaps during a 2004 DTM exhibition race in China – ironically, the driver back then was none other than current F1 Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer.

When Haas driver Romain Grosjean struck a similarly displaced drain cover and had a pretty nasty accident because of it, the team handed a hefty bill believed to be in the region of £500,000 to the Sepang International Circuit.

Given that this time, in addition to the completely destroyed underfloor, damaged power unit parts and probably a lot more that’s not easily visible, the complete chassis was cracked, we might easily be in the region of £1,000,000 upwards in damage on George Russell’s car. Suffice to say, I’m greatly looking forward to seeing how that is worked out.

And all of that was before an F2 driver ran over two marshals at low speed – they’re both fine, apparently. This weekend is a very weird one so far.

EDIT: slightly changed the wording for the link.

Graduate student of paleontology discovers in 2012 the motherlode of the ages, a Lagerstätte in Hell Creek, Montana with an obscenely rich fossilised record of [what's suspected to be] the first hour of meteorological extinction-level impact, completing our paleohistoric knowledge gap between the Cretaceous era and the Paleocene. Spends the next years digging away in secrecy, thoroughly cataloguing and preparing for publication with a small team of experts.

Anyone know the movie 'The Public' that came out last year, by Emilio Estevez? Not missing much, seems pretty meh. But apparently it used some old public domain footage in it at one point. Why is this news? Because it turns out twelve years ago a librarian uploaded that old US gov education film to youtube where it got about as much attention as you'd expect an old 1940s educational video to get... right up until NBC Universal issued a takedown notice against it for including footage from their movie.

So Japan's Emperor is abdicating. Kind of interesting that this seems to be flying under the radar news-wise.

Edit: Also, apparently China has sentenced a second Canadian to death for "producing and trafficking methamphetamine"

    Fuck China, seriously.

BBC has a good article about it. Definitely hadn't heard about it before I went looking though.

Talking as someone who’s lived there, it’s really going to be something. Japan’s emperors truly have defined entire eras, at least after the restoration. Meiji of ascendancy, Showa of WWII and it’s aftermath, and Heisei of the lost decades. It’ll be interesting what the new era heralds.

There was some discussion on the programming forums I follow as the new way of writing Japanese dates is only announced one month before it takes effect, making this the y2k equipment of Japan - lots of code has to be updated!

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/markdistefano/mastercard-activists-cut-off-donations-far-right

First it was "just build your own website", said the left's identitarians, as they keep trying to subsume every entertainment IP to have it follow their ideology.

Now it's "just build your own payment processor if you really need a debit card".

What's next? Build your own telecom company? Bank? Establish your own country, if you want a place to live without our bullshit?

I mean there are websites out there that allow people to express their opinions, and there are credit card companies that do business with people of different views than their own. Mastercard would have to be hilariously stupid to think that people who use their cards represent them, and would be doing worse financially if they refused to do business with anyone with whom 'activists' are at odds. Not only will they not be able to do business with alt right people, they won't be able to do business with people who do business with them, or people who do business with them, ad infinitum.
Most companies do their best to appear woke af, but it's not because they seriously care about/believe in any of this shit.

They have to put their money where their mouth is, so they learn to predict changes in the general socio-political opinions of the average person. Consequently they watch the things they say as a company, but that's because they're not stupid. I expect they'll evaluate the benefit of moving up one on the woke index and see if it's worth the cost.

@Silirt I would just like them to stop pretending that they do anything but handle money and stick to that.

And besides, isn't denying access to services based on political opinion like, a bad thing to do?

I am a confident as I can be, given the modern societal landscape, that if that vote actual happens, it's going to be firmly in the realm of telling the activists to fuck off; there's far too much money in play for them to be willing to cut ties like that. The whole thing is likely a fig leaf thrown out to appease the activists and try to counter the narrative they're spinning.

That said, I would really, really like a peek into the bizarro universe where MasterCard holds a vote about cutting ties to all communist organizations or whatever. Because I just know the Twitter meltdowns would be glorious.

One of these days, these idiots are going to realize the sword cuts both ways, and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing it.
