So they still haven't entirely dropped this retarded idea. We must think of the children, I guess, instead of having parents do that.

In other gaming related news, Paradox's new mobile title based off the Stellaris IP has been pulled from beta because the Chinese company they outsourced the job to has apparently just stolen a ton of art from other IPs (such asHalo) and ripped the code fromNova Empire (there's an error message that pops up that references it).

Not exactly a great start for their adventures into the mobile market.

That's what you get for blindly trusting the lowest bidder Chinese firm, I suppose. At least they're responding correctly.

Its not been dropped though, just rolled into the nonsense about online harms that they're still gunning for. Probably what they'll do is make it the responsibility of the pornography websites to enforce an age limit, put penalties in place in law, and then never enforce on it.

There's a reason I included both the last sentence and didn't copy the BBC title, let's just say that.
Your guess is far more informed than mine, and has the ring of truth. Laws that exist only on paper, useful in more than a few situations.

Zhao Ziyang (趙紫陽), whom I would parallel as the Chinese Robert F. Kennedy in the nostalgia of lost potential, was buried today under private guard in a ceremony for his closest family. This comes fifteen years after his death and the subsequent publication of his secret memoirs written through the last period of his life under house arrest.

Homecoming shooting in Texas leaves two dead and 16 injured. Officers believe the first victim was intentionally targeted and then the shooter fired into the crowd. The suspect is still at large.

With over 750 people there, it's a miracle that only 18 were hospitalized/killed. If the shooter had something more powerful than a handgun, this would be another major tragedy.

Handguns are good enough for that. Glocks killed a lot of people in Virginia Tech.

I had to sit back and re-assess my thoughts on that and my conclusions were that 1) it's a terrible on it's own that I didn't even think about Virginia Tech, 2) there's been so many more devastating ones recently I'm thankful it wasn't a something more powerful is a terrible mindset to look at shootings like this, and 3) the amount of complacent resignation with which I viewed that article says something about my age group and what shootings mean to young people.

Id take @Longsword words with a grain of salt tbh. Your initial statement was perfectly reasonable. If he’d gone in there with an AR-15 to commit mass murder it’d be an entirely different situation.

You’re definitely right. That would have amplified the damage to levels we’ve been seeing since summer. That would have been an even greater tragedy.

I think it’s the emotional state in which I wrote it and the “at least it wasn’t a big gun” mentality. It’s the departure from my usual “there shouldn’t be shootings at all” that bothers me. Balancing all the losses we’ve had and trying to keep them all in mind in the wake of more shootings is incredibly difficult and I think to some degree, I gave up trying to fight it.

I think this is a perfectly reasonable response to these kinda of atrocities. If you keep trying to understand and encompass what's going on here, it's a good way for your mental health to decline.

As someone that's not from the US, it's easy to just distance myself because they are so far away, and it's not my country. However, our own mosque shootings in March really brought this home for me.

Not to mention, when I was in the states a few months back, there was a shooting not far from me when I was in LA. That was also closer to home that I would have liked.

I’m sorry that it was so close. I’m glad you weren’t hurt. You’re definitely right about preserving your mental health. It’s hard. Life is just playing hardball right now.

Yeah, it is. And when it does, you really gotta start looking out for #1, and just focusing on what you can do for yourself.

Problem is, when we do that, we loose what made us great in the first place. What we are, collectively.

It's at times like these that I remember that the motto of the US used to be "Out of many, one". Until the Cold War, when it changed to "In God we trust".

Isn't e pluribus unum still everywhere or have I lost any sense of reality?

Denominations of money higher than the one dollar bill don't have 'E Pluribus Unum' anywhere on them. Looks like Innomine only has time for those big bills.

Haha, fair enough. I just went and looked at all the small change I have. You are right.

To be fair, all your TV shows only show the big bills.

Full sized Glocks come with a standard 17 round magazine. Combine that with multiple magazines and you can easily maim a lot of people.
"High powered" rifle rounds are not much of an issue when pistol calibre hollow points can be bought off any gun store.
Accounts of the shooting indicate that the shooter fired quite a lot of rounds randomly else he would have killed more people.
An AR-15 would have been harder to conceal. Shootings mostly happen within 50 yards where cartridge strength is not very important.
Tarrant went in with a rifle but he could have just as easily used a pistol, but pistols were far more restricted in NZ.
