    Hey guys,

I'm having trouble finding a copy of Side Jobs from UK retailers available actually available on the release date.

Everywhere is only doing Paperback, and they won't release it till April 14th, I've tried Amazon, WSH Smiths, Play, Waterstones... Nowhere will sell it before then.

is the American release date 6 months before Europe's or are they just being incredibly frustrating? Anyone else found somewhere they can order copies from? Trying to avoid importanting one from America but if it comes to that I'll do it.

    Thanks!

£19? Jesus christ.. Importing it's cheaper than that... looks like that's what it's gonna result in, damnit.

    Oh well, thanks anyway guys.

Try proxy servers. Depending on what nation my proxy was located in, I got a range of different prices from bookdepository.com £13.17, £13.62, £10.42, etc. You can use an Egyptian proxy, for example, and then just change the currency in the top right dropdown box.

Just don't use any payment method while using a public proxy. They're not safe.

If the site can't be fooled by saving a shopping basket via proxy and then logging in without the proxy, then you could just get someone in another country to buy it for you.

Hmm, for some reason I thought this was going to be a paperback release. Hardcover only?

And the 26th is in 3 hours on the West Coast. It's already available on the East.

Oh fail... I thought it was the 24th. This is what 15 hour work days do to me, I guess.

edit: My kindle isn't delivering me the book and it's past 12... this isn't my day.

I'd order a side job if I was in the UK.

Got it. Read it. I haven't read the short story involving Harry, Murphy, and Love Spells before so that was a nice little story. And then new one, Aftermath, well, it was good. It was kind of disapointing, with almost no elaboration on the events at the end of changes, but it was a good story anyway.

Also read it. I read two shorts I hadn't seen before -- the Harry/Murphy Love Spell one and the one with the Grendelkin. Both of those were good for what they were.

Aftermath I also liked, but I agree that it seemed... to fall short of what I was hoping for.

We got little to no elaboration on what happened at the end of the Changes. Spoilers incoming...

I have a hard time accepting Murphy in this one. She might not be a cop anymore, or won't be shortly, so I can understand her not investigating Harry's apparent murder with the Police, but I can't see her not making any moves.

There are calls she could make -- like to Kincaid & Ivy -- and people she could presumably contact -- like Ebenezer. Even if she doesn't have contact info for Eb at hand I'd guess she has it somewhere since she is going to be dealing with Harry's will and I'm sure Harry listed Eb in there somewhere.

I know that she gets sidetracked fairly quickly with helping Will, but she should know the longer she waits the less likely it is that anyone will figure out who killed Harry.

I cannot see her simply not acting at all like she did.

    Ah well.

The story itself was pretty good. Murphy and Billy vs. the bad guys. Liberal dash of Marcone & co. thrown in as helpful bad guys. Decent bit of plot, drama, and action.

It's just not what I was expecting so it struck me as slightly disappointing (I'm sure once Ghost Story is out I'll go re-read it and be happier with it).

Not reading the spoiler, but that sounds fucking depressing, I thought he was better then to jerk us around.

It's clear that he left the cliff hanger in Changes to sell this anthology, because either he or his publisher knew the damn thing wouldn't sell well unless there was an incentive for people to buy it beyond his normal shorts.

However I'm actually pretty satisfied with what they did explain. The short story comes off as something realistic from the view point of Murphy. She's not superwoman, and she doesn't have the ties that Dresden has. How is she supposed to find out what happened? I think this really wasn't that bad.

Personally, I would have bought the anthology either anyway, but that's just me. The shorts tend to fill in tiny details that get left out of the novels, and allow some development of the secondary characters, especially the Alphas.

That being said, no, Aftermath did not add much to the story of Harry post-Changes - but that really wasn't the intention. It was suppose to add to the world, the Dresdenverse itself, and in that, I think it succeeded.

Plus I like where he's headed with Andi. :awesome

Personally, I feel that the Marcone story, Even Hand, is much more revealing than Aftermath. In Even Hand it is revealed that
Marcone was coming up with a way to assassinate Harry Dresden. By the end of the story, he has proof it works. Magic Piercing Bullets.

Oh it's not that I think she should find out what happened, it's that I think she should have dealt a little more with what did happen (or at least appeared to happen).

She could have considered contacting Kincaid to ask if they knew anything or for his personal advice on where the shooter would have been. I don't think she should have -- but I am surprised it didn't cross her mind.

She could have contacted Thomas to tell him about his brother. She did not even think about it.

She could have let Michael know so he could tell his daughter once she was out of the hospital. Or else go protect her just in case the WC shows up for her head.

She may or may not have ways to contact Eb.

I understand her not dealing with the will since that is a legal issue and Harry is missing not dead at the moment.

Mouse is still with Thomas I guess, but she doesn't spare him a thought. Shouldn't someone look for Mister?

I would have expected her to think about how evidence would be best collected ASAP, magical or not, wonder if anyone from the other side of the tracks was around, then realize that they couldn't have used magic b/c it would have warned Harry so there wouldn't be magical evidence, etc.

There are really good reasons why she didn't do a lot of things. There are probably speculative reasons about why she didn't do most of the other stuff. Not to mention that she got distracted fairly quickly helping Will out. But I still have trouble accepting just how little she did (or thought about doing) in relation to Harry's apparent murder, even if she chooses to believe he isn't dead for now.
It felt to me more like Harry was out of town on a case than like Harry was presumed dead.

That said I did re-read it and I feel better about it as a whole now. The story itself, from Murphy's point of view, was spectacular. I loved Martian, I loved hearing Murphy's thoughts, and I felt that the plot itself and the case were appropriate for her skill set and whatnot.

There's all sorts of little tidbits in there that tie into other stories, like the past incursions on Marcone's territory.

It's a brilliant novella. My only gripe is that it wasn't what I expecting -- not that it isn't good. I didn't expect answers about the end of Changes, but I was expecting action/thoughts regarding it that I didn't get. That's fine, really, just a bit of a disconnect.

Bought the book yesterday, had it on the passenger seat of my car, left it there overnight cause I got out of work late and thought I'd start it tomorrow (today) on my lunch break.

This morning, I got to my car and some crackwhore had smashed out my rear window. There was nothing of value in my car and given where I live it's fuckers literally breaking into cars to steal pocket change.

So long story short, someone from the housing projects broke into my car and stole my copy of Side Jobs.

    /me rages.
