So, I don't have it in me right now to wonder how the embedding works.

This is my old boy Elmo, 14 years and a bit. Today we had to put him down due to a nervous system sickness caused by old age. I'm absolutely heartbroken. There is not enough tears in me or whiskey in my cabinet to drown this sorrow.

I got to say goodbye to my dear friend just before I left for work after he had started deteriorating in shape but couldn't be there for his last moments as it took only 5 hours from perfectly fine to needing to be put down to end the suffering, really hurts. You who still have pets alive, cherish every moment, you never know which one is the last.

This is Wynne. She goes by Winnie, but most of the time I call her Starbark.

Starbark is the kind of name that just tickles my fancy for some reason. It's the kind of name where if you heard a woman yelling, "C'mere, Starbark!" in a dog park, you'd just automatically assume that she had a home birth in a hot tub. A 6 foot tall guy with a beard who's rapidly approaching 30 calling his dog Starbark just... makes me grin.

It's been a journey. She's an English Shepard, has a ton of energy, likes to bite everything, and is super smart. She's, what... 16 weeks old now? Had her about a month and a half. And I'm just now starting to feel like I can see a little daylight.

This was her at about 6 weeks, before I picked her up:

This was her at about, uhh.. 9 weeks? Just after I got her.

This was her at 12 weeks, ish.

And this is her this afternoon, at ~16 weeks.

She's finally getting to the point where she's had 3/4 of her shots and can take walks into town with me and get All The Pets (tm). And not completely lose her shit at walking on a sidewalk. And not try to herd people. She really wants to herd people. I may have to get a flock of sheep.

I'm also ruthlessly exploiting her adorable puppy face to get dates.

I figure it's an equitable tradeoff for waking up at 6 AM every morning for a month.

Don't lie, you're obviously using her to herd women together for a harem.

Oh my, how did I not realize this thread existed.

    Newcomb's dog is adorable.

And here is my adorable / ridiculous / derpy Corgi, Fenny (HHGTTG reference, yes), whom I adopted about 3.5 years ago:

    Looking sophisticated:

    Looking festive:

    Looking confusedly at her doppelgänger:

    Looking ferocious (and wet):

Showing off her devotion to the process of democracy:

And putting up with my shit in making her do silly things:

That post should come with a 'do not look at in dark rooms' warning for the last picture alone.

Cute little arrogant cat you have there.

You can't see either him or his brother in dark rooms - the number of times I've tripped over them in the past year alone...

They're fucking enormous too, and like to lie on stairs.

Our beautiful Kidra died today. She developed a thyroid problem that at her age, even with medication, she simply couldn't outpace; her years caught up with her.

I thought I'd made my peace with her imminent mortality months ago... even as much as a year ago, maybe -past 12 or so, every extra moment you get with a cat is bonus time, I said- but after watching her fade... well, I admit to taking it harder than I thought I would.

18 years and roughly 7 months old: 17 of those years spent with us, from the early weeks of 2001 to today. She'd been with us so long... it's going to leave a terrible hole in our lives for some time. I was 24 when she appeared outside in the window box, a stray lightly coated with the falling snow, and now I'm 41 and she is gone.

I don't know what it's going to feel like, to make pizza tonight without her standing up beside me to beg for cheese, but "rather awful" seems like a fair guess at the moment.

18 and 7 is phenomenal for a cat -"Good innings" as they say in some parts of the world- but no amount of time is ever really enough, whether you're on two legs or four. It does not ease the goodbyes.

That is one hell of a content cat, and the album is even better.

    Condolences, Warlocke.
