Hey, I've got a bit of a gaming problem I was hoping someone could help me out with. Yesterday a friend and I were trying to play online, me at my house and he at his. He got the game all set up and then I tried to find him and join. The problem was I couldn't find him. I tried typing in his IP and the name of the computer, still nothing. I changed some settings on my firewall and added him as a trusted IP, still nothing.
So we decide to do it the other way, I set up the game and he joins, the problem was still there, this time he couldn't find me no matter what he did.

The funny thing about this is that just three days ago I took my laptop over to his place to get the game and then we played it while I was still there and everything worked fine. Now, that I am back at my place however, it doesn't seem to work.

I think at least part of the problem might be that we were using 192.168.*.* addresses, but I cannot remember how to find out the public address and then how to change it and configure the routers to the correct ports.

    Any thoughts?

Your IP address is 127.0.0.1, try that.

    ...

Google "what is my IP address" and have your friend do the same thing. Make sure you open the correct port through your router (check your game settings to see what that might be)

Okay thanks, I found my ip address here but I am confused on opening the correct port on the router, how do you check to find out what the might be and alter it so that we are using a public IP address rather than the private 192.168 one

    depends on your router.

In general, go to the configuration menu and look for something like "port forwarding", then tie a port (or range) to your 192.168.x.x address.

Okay, so then I go in and tie a port to my 192.168 address and it should work?

If you set the *right* port it should work. In theory.

    Good Luck.

Any tips on how you know if it is the right port?

    Thanks for the help :)

Most newer routers have a 'Gaming' section of sorts so you can checkmark which game and tie it with your private IP (the 192.168.x.x one) in a pretty straight-forward kind of web GUI. If yours doesn't, you'll have to search Google for what port your game uses and do the port forwarding like Nukular said.

I know in Linsys routers, port forwarding is under 'Applications and Gaming'. A Google search along the lines of '[game name] online play through [router type]' or something like that should give you a better idea.

Well, if you want to be lazy, just set DMZ mode on your router. That opens up all ports. =P.
