I'm looking for a story where Snape plays a major role--maybe even being the main character--but the author doesn't try to make him look like a martyr or a misunderstood, perfect angel. Basically I'm looking for a story that has a tone of "Snape is an awful human being but hey look he's still competent. But man he's sort of a dick."

Bonus points if Snape's involvement involves him having to play spy/investigate stuff.

Nearly every story I read where Snape played a major role he seemed to become a saint halfway through the summary, so I would be very thankful if you guys could suggest something like that for me.

Midnight gold, Rise of the Forgotten Lord.

The story is still in the initial stages. Harry is close to being perfect, but it's readable. Oh and Snape is one greasy motherfucker.

On the Way to Greatness by MiraMirth. Snape isn't coodling or outright hostile. Neutral! Snape.

Yeah. Those first came to my mind. I'll see if I got anymore of those and post them.

 

The Apprentice is probably the best Snape-centric fic out there.

River of Dreams is also Snape-centric. Does a good job with characterization etc. Kinda slow-paced, get past like chapter 12 or 13 for it to pick up.

That's about it, really.
