What school do you go to? lol

The majority of my finals are projects/papers. I have like...2 actual exams. But...

2 Ethics Papers: One 6 Pager on Utilitarianism, a 10 pager on Feminist Ethics
3 Contemporary Philosophy Papers: 3 Page Mind-Body Problem, 10 Page Application of Explanatory Reasoning to Consciousness, 1 Page Reflection
Biology Lab Notebook: Basically lab reports. About 20 Pages.
Prospectus Paper: For my thesis, had to write my reseach plan. 10 Pages.

    So...
    60 Pages of writing.
    I've done about...25 so far.

Dates are the usual for Belgium unis. Depending on what you study you could have exams twice a year (me), thrice a year (me at my uni a couple years back) or even 6 times a year (medical at my uni). Whichever it is, you'll always have exams in June and vacation from July to the end of September. Second chances at exams are from middle August to the very first days of September, if that.

Dunno how other Euros do it, but that's how we roll.

Better get cracking, then. No time like the present.

In my final 3 days at my current job. The new job starts next Monday. I moved most of my life 350 miles south in a van at the weekend, and now I'm living out of a bag for my last few days of work and cleaning the flat this week. Fun times! Just got to do the drive one last time on Friday and then I'm done!

And my body is actually killing me. Boxes, too many boxes, too many very heavy boxes!

TOMD: Took me all weekend and I might have to take out a loan to help pay for it, but I submitted my application to study abroad at the University of Manchester next spring.

Spent quite a bit of thinking about this, but overall I think this works out better. This gives me an extra semester to play with (Berkeley Engineering kicks you at 8, but the one abroad doesn't count even though you get to make progress), which means that I can take a lighter load and do some more of the stuff that I find genuinely enjoyable about school (TAing, tutoring, and chatting with people from all sorts of backgrounds/disciplines). It's not 100% sure until I'm accepted, but I'm told it's a pretty sure thing since we have an established relationship and I meet the stated requirements.

While I do want to be done as a student, I'd rather delay my graduation by 6 months and enjoy the 18, than be done in 12 and hate them. Also this gives me the opportunity to do a third internship, and then look for a full time job in Fall 2019 with a pretty light final semester schedule. Worth it in the end I think.

If you end up getting into Manchester, let me know...that's where I'm moving to!

This was a good decision you made here! The experience will be worth the loan.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to be doing a semester abroad on a tight schedule. You'll be adapting to life in a new country and a new school. If your uni isn't helping you with accommodation, there should be other students going on exchange or away on internship and subletting their places.

Aaand exchange students (especially the non-mathy ones) "socialise" quite a bit more than regular ones. There's usually lots of events, pub crawls, trips to other cities and what have you.

All of that's a lot tougher if your course selection is all upper level engineering and maths.

TOMD: Took a day trip to London because I've always wanted to take the Eurostar through the Chunnel and today provided the perfect opportunity. Had an early lunch with an old friend from college and then wandered around the British Museum until it was time to head back. I made sure to stop by Platform 9 and 3/4ths because it would have been criminal to be so close and skip it. Especially as I've been posting on a Harry Potter Fanfiction board for . . . 13 years?

But did you take a run at the wall though? Just to make sure. :)

Dobby might have been blocking it though. Giovanni MUST NOT GO TO HOGWARTS!

There were too many Muggles in line, so I went to the official store and paid an exorbitant amount for the "Dobby is a Free Elf" t-shirt. Mrs. Giovanni judged me so much, but 0 fucks given. At least I didn't spend $100 on a 100% wool house scarf (I should have done this.)

TOMD: Filed tax statement online. I think everything's fine. I really don't want to have to go there in person. Fuck standing in lines, that's why we have Internet.

TOMD: Voted in the local mayoral election today. Had to go to the electoral office since I won't be in town on Sunday. It was an interesting experience – I thought about just not voting this time and only turning up for the second round (which seems quite likely to happen this time), but in the end my conscience won out.

TOMD: First, I have a cold, so I hate everything.

Second, I bought a car at the beginning of February, and the bank told me the other day that they never got the title. Three games of phone tag later (bank, DMV, dealer), I find out it's because the dealer never paid the DMV the right amount for the title application, that they got a letter about it, but didn't feel like fucking doing anything about it. What the fuck.

That sounds like an extra 2k or so off the asking price for your troubles in my ears. Or a re-negotiation of an existing contract. I'd basically be like, look bitch, what are /you/ going to give me :)

So my boss and I had our weekly one on one today, and I walked into that meeting expecting criticism since my deliverables haven't quite been delivered to my satisfaction.

Instead I walked out with a pep talk, congratulations, and a (small/moderate) bonus? Imposter syndrome is a bitch I guess, because damn.

TOMD: Continuing the theme of living my best life rather than just making campaigns happen for shitty ungrateful candidates, I took Mrs. Giovanni out to lunch at a 3 Michelin star restaurant today. It's a very novel experience, having literally everything but the actual chewing/swallowing done for you, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a spare mortgage payment sitting around. 100% worth it. While the difference between two stars and three stars is largely politics and the intangibles, I would still strongly recommend it.

Even at 380 Euros/person plus the cost of your wine pairings.

Tomorrow I fly back. Friday I have two conversations with shitty ungrateful candidates who would like to be my shitty ungrateful candidates.

Today was my last day of work. I had my exit interview with the GM...I laid waste. I broke some news to her she didn't know, I told her all the secrets that were being kept from her, and at the end she actually apologised to me for how I'd been treated by various other folk in the company. Nice to get the apology, just several weeks too late to keep me from leaving!

Had a nice dinner out with a few of my preferred colleagues, amused them greatly with tales of what I told the GM in my exit interview.

I'm looking forward to getting the gossip on what ends up happening as a result!

I've done this exit interview before. Let's see if yours results in a massive restructuring and firing of a bunch of people like mine did.

Just finished reading City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965 for my history class, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. There wasn't really anything in it that was surprising per say, but to see it all laid out so cleanly and backed up by such an absurd amount of citations is still hard to swallow.

EDIT: The core argument of the book is that incarceration in LA wasn't really used as a from of punishing crime so much as a tool of racial elimination starting with the Natives, then moving to Mexicans once they all but exterminated the local tribes, and ending with African Americans once they started handling Mexicans through the illegal immigration set of laws/prisons. They also consistently used the prisoners for convict labor, or even better, imprisoned them on public order charges whenever migrant workers came into the city to shelter for the winter months. So yeah, not exactly surprising, but definitely different from what I was previously taught.

I'm originally from Mexico, so I knew that a lot of what the US taught in history classes in relation to international relations (key example for me is the Mexican American War) was hilariously biased, but this class as a whole has really shown me that the domestic history is just as dishonest (if not more).
